No one's there to safeguard, babysit or spoonfeed you. Take it as you will.

As an intern you probably won't feel the full extent of the culture. During your internship make friends with the people there and see what hints they drop about the department / team.

No
I quit law completely. Developed mental and physical health issues.
Nobody even said “thank you” during my notice period despite giving so much.
I knew I made the right move. The only regret was not leaving earlier.

I realise that even if you do nothing and people will still talk about you.
Just know that your colleagues are ultimately your colleagues, no matter how friendly you all are. I always find it best to keep a professional distance so that whatever gossip spread around, people cannot find ways to put words in your mouth.
Work wise, I think the best way to do is to just slog quietly and don't care about the politics. Actually people are not blind one, they can see and know who can work and who cannot work.
I have an observation lah. Those people at the top of the game really put all in to work, no time to engage in politics and petty gossip.

Same here I used to think that my boss value me. And he really express his appreciation during my time there because I am one of his significantly better workers Once I tendered my resignation, I realised that no matter how good you are, everyone in replaceable. Not even a thank you, not even a apology when I carry my colleagues workload for so long

So people in the industry aren’t nice and they are all opportunists?

They are bad. The nice ones end up as bakers or making their own small chinatown firms.
