Reason for the lesser title is cos it’s cheaper for the firm.
Then some firms call their associates legal assistant?
Means what? Secretary? Please...

There there dont cry.
No need to keep posting in denial to make yourself feel better.
If it makes you feel better, I'll pretend that you are an associate OK?

You're really jumping through hoops trying to convince yourself that you got a good deal eh?
Your despicable boss/firm seem to have strung you along conning you into thinking you're doing real "legal associate work" while paying you peanuts for it. That's highly despicable of him/it.
Look, I've nothing against you personally but you need to focus ur energies on getting yourself out of a career rut instead of fighting so hard online to convince others of something to make yourself feel better.
If you're still not convinced that a Legal Exec is not a Legal Associate, regardless of what Kool-Aid your firm is selling you, tomorrow just go to your boss and ask him 2 very simple questions:
(1) Can you sign off on the firm's letterhead?
(2) Is your firm paying subscription for Professional Indemnity coverage for you?
Pls focus your energies on getting a real LA role for the sake of your own career. Hustle outside where it really matters, not online where it doesn't. That's all i have to say

Yes, i agreed with poster. just go and get a real LA role. Dont spoil the d a m n market. It is of all this crap thats why firms are squeezing us. End of the day, ppl will just think that you are not up to standard and thats why you are only a legal exe. UNLESS you are at MC or international big firm.

in england, legal executives can become partners, so road to equity is still there.

Then just go or stay there. If you are talking about sg, this is definitely not the case.
Come on UK grad, dont bring ur stuff back to sg. I hate it when grads like to "IN XXX, ....". If really so then just stay there.

Whilst some of the replies on the status of legal execs are difficult to stomach because they are somewhat rude, they are generally correct and legal execs need to understand the consequences of being mired in an LE role.
(1) PQE Stagnation - A legal executive may be legally trained and may even have crossed the Singapore Bar. He will be a fee earner in the firm, but he is not a "lawyer" for the purposes of delivering legal advice which clients can rely on. A legal executive is not entitled to give legal advice because he does not have a practising certificate, and is neither licensed nor insured to do so. Your PQE will not go up as a legal executive. This has consequences for your legal career as the non-accrual of PQE means that you will not be eligible for partnership in a Singapore law firm. I believe the minimum legal requirements for normal partners are 3PQE, and for managing partners 5PQE.
(2) Career/Salary stagnation - As a Magic Circle Legal Exec, you may be earning $1,000 or so more than the suffering Big4 Associate, but his PQE accumulation will place him in good stead to make the jump over to the Magic Circle as a full fledged associate, and when that day comes, his salary will be more than double of yours. The short term gain will only lead to long term pain.
(3) Blackmarked CV - Being a legal executive in a MC / International firm doesn't pay, because in exchange for the "high salary" of $7,000-8,000 a month, you suffer the consequences of a black mark on your CV. Prospective hirers will take this to that your peers trumped you in the battle to secure junior associate positions. This would close the door on prestige-centric firms like the Magic Circle and White Shoe firms.
All in all, a legal exec position is a bad, bad idea which undeniably sets you back in the long run. It's a scam and you shouldn't fall for the honey-coated lies told to you by the people who propagated this scam for their benefit.
Whilst it is not easy to stomach, this is earnest advice which bears the best of intentions. I hope you find the courage to make the right move, and I wish you all the best!
