I’m another poster. You are quite naive. If you have friends in other industries you’ll realise they don’t have it easy either. Government sectors also normal to work until 8pm. Marketing/design/advertising etc have it worst, 12am days and weekends burnt are normal. Even some back office bank jobs require you to work till almost 12am everyday . That’s life for you. But these people are still just being paid 3-4K, quite pathetic

i'm the original poster - nope, i'm not. i definitely have lots of peers with horrible hours (especially in litigation), and i definitely have seen my share of going home past midnight for weeks. but there are occasional lull periods. all i'm saying is, bad hours, OT and burnt weekends are the norm in most industries i've seen - marketing, audit, banking. it's just that they happen to earn a lot less.

Anyway I don’t know which department you’re in. But if you’re in things like IP/TMT, obviosuly your hours and workload is far much lesser than say someone in capital markets.
In a big law firm with many different practice areas, it doesn’t mean all department have bad hours. But it isn’t correct to compare when you are fortunate enough to be in a practice area that have it easier as compared to your peers, and the fact that both of you draws the same is simply outrageous.

uhhh what is there to be 'correct' or 'not correct' about? i was simply addressing #2216's post that our salary - when compared against other grads/industries - is terrible based on the number of hours we work/hourly rates. all i'm saying is, a lot of fresh grads generally have it tough everywhere, whether its big4 audit or oglivy or random startup. if anything, it is incorrect to think that only lawyers have it tough/the worst hours.

of course i recognise that i am fortunate compared to my peers in the legal fraternity and my experiences are not representative of every single young lawyer out there. get off your moral high horse.

To those who thinks that law pays a lot, please get this out of your pea brain.

The hours you work and the toxic environment is totally not worth it.

I don’t understand why do you law degree holders are wearing mask and remain oblivious to the fact that you have one of the worst jobs, longest working hours, and not paid as much and want to deny being so.

Frog in a well?

Anyone doing training now feeling all stressed out?
Can’t sleep properly
Don’t look forward to go office
Get scolded every day for making mistakes
Even no mistakes also get picked on
Why am I so unlucky and not meet nurturing bosses?
Life in law school was so easy. I hardly need to study and could still graduate with a 2:1.
Now back in Sinfapore it is a terrible work culture I am facing.

What should I do? Am I alone?

Dear seniors out there,
How was it like when you were doing your training? Did things change for the better/worse after you got qualified?

Hang in there. Look for other firms when you have free time. Whether or not you actually jump during training doesn’t really matter, just searching for other firms can be a way survive the 6 months. Anyway it’s quite common to jump ship halfway through training to a place with better prospects. The previous trainees under your boss probably left halfway as well.

Are you doing your RLT now? Signed for PTC at the same firm as well?? Escape while you can.

It’s a shitty feeling going to work everyday la. Bosses for nothing just pick on me because I am good to bully? Plus the stress of entering office, work over weekends, cancelled so many of my plans. My diet suffered. I am getting depression. My hair is turning grey. And I get rings in my eyes. And the people in my firm and industry are quite nasty. They lack compassion and kindness when treating fellow human beings.

To those who says that law pays a lot, are you guys lying to the rest of people? It is such an
inhumane place. How do you people even have the time to enjoy life with the money you earn?

How do you find a firm mid way to do tc?

I am quite certain I won’t want to practice.

Training was bad. Lacked mentoring, daily pressure.

It got much worse after I was qualified.

My health and my relationship with my husband suffered, quarreled almost every morning before leaving for work, fallen sexual drive. My marriage almost gotten a divorce.
Pushed back my plans for baby too. That’s just another story. In short, things just got worse and whatever that I earned could not buy me back my youth and time with my husband and a baby we were wanting to have.

I quit practice.

Still, I find myself rather fortunate compared to many of my friends who ended up single and umnmarried in their 30s with a somewhat imbalanced mindset that work is their everything. And they don’t date at all either. They just take out their frustration on the people in their offices. Basically they have no life to speak of and nobody to love them.

No I am not trying to bash my own gender. You can see it for yourself.
