He is from Davinder Singh Chambers. The culture is the same.

HR and secretaries are like the nurses for the legal profession. If you make them hate you, you are done for as a junior lawyer. So maybe just try your best stay out of their crosshairs. Don't go against them lol. Just go office, do work, go back home. If you are so boring nobody will gossip about you. If in any case you interact with them, just be super nice. It might be hard to hear this when 30/35yrs are acting like this, but this is the real world. Can't change them, so just change yourself.
Agree. You may be surprised however that even being boring and not going against anyone might nevertheless be a cause for gossip in certain quarters. I don’t look down on ah lians at all, but the only explanation is ah lians simply cannot see beyond their limited world view.

I know one in a non-legal role who spends most of her day discussing loudly about what to eat and what she thinks of others’ appearances (she’s ok with makeup and nice clothes on but not exactly a natural looker herself). When potential clients ask further about the differences in firm’s billing practices, answers can be as crude as ‘my boss also needs to eat y’know’… No matter how high such people manage to rise in terms of SES, such habits mark the difference between class and crass.

Basically politics exist in law firms too.. and sometimes worse than normal firms because some paralegals/seccies somehow get arrogant because their boss is a high-flyer, not to mention lawyers themselves tend to be cliquey.

Thoughts on the breakaway team from ELDAN Law? Shouldn't the firm be renamed LDAN Law now?

Currently in a dilemma where I want to break tc and change firms. In a mid sized firm doing liti and while my team is alright, the office culture downright sucks. The HR and secretaries and typical ah lians who gossip about trainees and snitch to the bosses. The other team is also very bitchy and none of the assocs make an effort to interact with the trainees. Am thrown straight into the deep end as well and asked to write appeal subs without given a template to work with. Turnover rate is very high. None of the assocs from last year stayed.
Sounds like a you problem.

HR and Seccies are HR and Seccies. They are the same everywhere.

You are in a mid-sized, perfectly normal that the assocs just do their work and go home, and don't bother mingling. In fact, that's a good thing.

You are thrown into the deep end. That is also a good thing. You are no longer a student. Time to wear your big boy pants.

And if you are not. Nothing to to be too depressed about. Just go to a small firm where they will hand hold you. There are quite a few like those with very patient bosses. Not to say that all small firms are so accommodating. Pay will be 500-1000 though.
