If dregs of society like you can still scrape by in law (if you're even a lawyer), I don't think the asker will have a problem surviving and thriving past their first month in training.

Harsh truths are tough to swallow. The legal industry is a very small circle and having the right connections will make a huge difference to your career trajectory. If you're from a lower middle income family, first generation lawyer, or worse first generation degree holder, then be ready to work your ass off and prove yourself a useful and loyal slave while continuing to think autonomously and plan your next move quietly. If you can do that you'll survive well enough.

You're acting like poorer and less connected folks won't have it tougher in other jobs too.

In smaller circles, smaller industries, connections become more important. The legal industry in Singapore is a very small circle.

The alternative is to apply for civil service jobs.
It is still meritocratic.
