Any good reason why you didn’t want to go for big 4 for your first 2 firms?
They’re likely to ask you that - because if work life balance is what you were after from the beginning, they’re bound to ask you that why a change of mind

Truth be told I didn’t go for Big 4, as my overseas uni isn’t that a good one and like I felt I would be no match for NUS SMU students. Frankly speaking I feel that sometimes. As such I was ready to just settle for any small mid outfit. That’s what happened to practically all those in my year of that overseas uni cohort.
Well shortly after I signed contract with current firm #04, a big firm shortlisted me for interview. But I felt it wouldn’t be right for me to attend since I already have a contract and politely declined. Deep inside I kinda wonder what would have been.
Would I be marked if I try to reapply? That’s my worry as I think I’ve mustered up more experience and would hope to step up.
Firm #04 has well given me quite a good grounding legal practice wise la, but there’s so much limitation one can go. I know SA or partner is never going to happen.

I didn’t think my university would be good enough for the Big4. Further at that time all I wanted was to get called with no intention to stay on in practice but well fast forward this isn’t the case. Further, my peers landed chinatown sweatshops, mid, barely any making it to a big firm.
Shortly after I signed contract with firm #04, well a Big4 called me for an interview but by then it was too late, and i felt it wouldn’t be right to attend, since I already landed a job. Furthermore, it would be no guarantee I would get the job anyway. Would I be blacklisted that’s my worry, as I wrote in to decline the interview.
Part of me wonders what would have been. But well, mainly remuneration and I think I’ve reached a point I don’t want to get stuck in small-mid firms forever.

I felt that even with FC from a lower ranked overseas uni, I wouldn’t get a foot in the B4. I have no daddy mummy connections. As such I was just ok to settle for smaller medium sized firms as the plan was just to get called. But well, things changed and I decided to give myself a few years in practice.
I signed with firm 04, as it reminded me a lot with the mid firm I spent a year with. Pretty much similar size wise, and work life balance wise. However, after signing contract with this firm I got shortlisted for B4 interview earlier this year by one B4. However I wrote in to decline the interview as I felt it was not right since I signed contract already.
Am thinking of applying there again, my worry is that I would be blacklisted.

Meaning it’s too little or too much in your assessment?

Seems like the first batch of suss graduates are all doing well with small to mid size companies.

OP here. I didn't think coming from my overseas uni was good enough for B4, let alone expect to get a FCH, so I was content to just settle for any small-med size practice for the sake of simply getting called. During RLT/TC time I had no intention to stay on in practice. However, well, things changed.
While my current and one of my previous mid sized firm offered good work life balance, after spending time in these kind of outfits, part of me wants to move up the ladder. There's no chance of making SA, let alone Director-partner.
One concern, however, was after signing contract with firm #04 (my current firm), a Big4 shortlisted me for interview, and by then, I had to decline by email, as I felt it would be wrong to do so having signed contract with my current firm. Would it be worth reapplying again? I'm a bit scared of being blacklisted.

OP here. FCH was not something I expected to get, so I was content to just settle for any small-med size practice for the sake of simply getting called. I had no intention to stay in practice then. My RLT and TC firm is one of the 4, which I spent a year in thereafter as assoc.
While my current (Firm #04) and one of my previous mid-sized firm offered good work life balance, after spending time in these kind of outfits, part of me wants to move up the ladder. Pay is stagnant and there’s no prospect of making it partner, let alone SA.
