Not to be an ass, but can you even make it as a academic? There's a big difference in pay between a person who is 1st Class Honours, willing to take LLM to harvard/oxbridge, and churning out 20 good research papers/books and a person who is 2nd Upper (regardless of your churn).
The first one can expect to be fast-tracked to Full Prof or Dean. The second one is gonna spend alot more years as Assoc Prof. This is the equivalent of SP and P in private practice.
But if you're the first type, you can probably earn alot more in private practice anyway.
If you're the second type, your pay is going to stagnate in academia, so you'll still earn alot more in private practice.

Assuming this isn't a troll or lazy question and you actually have realistic prospects of academia, I'll attempt to respond seriously with some points you can consider:
What are your grades - I assume you're on track for first class? This is basic pre-requisite. Have you done some supervised research paper / project in your 4 years in NUS? Is your supervisor willing to vouch for your work?
Are you confident of obtaining Sheridan Fellowship? This is the flagship feeder pathway to academia for NUS law. You should speak to your profs / ex- and current Fellows about this and whether your profile is on track for this.
Academia and practice isn't a dichotomy though. There are many profs who've practised for a few years and/or were JLCs before transiting to academia. Practicing doesn't mean forgoing the academic track. In fact, these profs were actively practising and building up their academic profile through publishing papers in journals before jumping full time into academia. Just go and look up the profile of some of your NUS law profs.
I won't even talk about the fact that you need to love research and publication, because that's a given.
By posing your query as a simplistic reductive dichotomy, I suspect you haven't put serious thought into it.
Why don't you aim to obtain a JLC first during which you will have the opportunity to assess if academia is a good fit for your interests and aspirations?

Thanks for the insights. Yes I’m on track for a FCH.
Been mulling over whether to give academia a shot, or apply for JLC / TC.
I’m not aiming to be a Dean. Just a tenured associate prof eventually.
An associate prof versus a partner in a mid size - the basic pay is about the same right?

If you're talking about the lower mid-sizes (ie. Not HE or SL), then that sounds about right, but only at the 5-10ish PQE mark. An assoc prof doesn't get payjumps on the scale of private firms partners, and you'll swiftly find yourself losing out.
Unless you're dean or full prof, you're looking at earning 30% less than your peers, especially if your goal is not Dean/Full Prof level. Furthermore, assoc prof pay tops out quite fast. Aiming to be a tenured assoc prof is the equivalent of aiming to remain at JP level for the rest of your life, except at less pay.

Yes but the base salary for a partner in a lower-tier mid size firm is representative of the majority of the lawyering population in Singapore. I think that’s an acceptable benchmark.
