Really that's strange. I never had that experience even in a big local firm. As long as you're timely with work and generally responsive/contactable, nobody cares if you disappear for a midday coffee or leave in the evening for gym. nobody tracked what time i turn up in the office

There's actually more clockwatching and work tracking in inhouse at least. YMMV i suppose.

Indeed. My b4 experience is the same. I have colleagues coming in at 11am and nobody will give a ****, even the partners, so long as you get your work done. You will always end up sending emails till 1am every other day anyway so you really think they will give a **** about what time you get to office?

would expect it to be 20-30% cut from same pqe in priv practice?

(not sure if in-house counsel are entitled to stock compensation)

OP here. Also from B4. Indeed nobody gives a **** if you stroll in at 11am. But I felt a lot of pressure to be “seen” in the office after 7pm regardless of whether I was actually physically needed - there were a number of partners in my dept who cared a lot about facetime lol.

Before Covid, had quite a lot of seniors just whiling (i.e. wasting) away time talking at the breakroom or doing irrelevant stuff, then starting work later in the day, just for facetime purposes.

I mostly finished my work within working hours (of course with OT - but never to the extent of seniors) but felt so paiseh to leave even though I think hours worked per day was the same between me and the seniors.

I honestly keep thinking, who does this serve? Everyone's quality of life decreases because of some stupid facetime culture.

Do you think this is a Big4 issue, a firm issue, or your team's issue?
