Thinking of changing jobs to somewhere with automotives exposure to expand my portfolio, diploma in electronic engineering with 6 sigma greenbelt, PMP and CQE, I have internal auditor certificate for ISO13485. Applying for another senior engineer role in ST.
Spoke to someone from ST I know and I was told that I won't get the kind of salary I am getting at my current job and will only be offered E4 even though I am E6 or M1 equivalent now. What is E4/E6/M1? I am drawing slightly above 6K with up to 2 months variable bonus. Is this too high for a senior engineer role in ST?

E4 is assistant engineer level. I think that ST friend you know told you that because you are a diploma holder even though you got so many other certificates. I know it is stupid but that is how ST works in a nutshell. more than 6K and 2 month bonus is really high for even E6, I agree with that other poster with your background, dun come to ST.

Today degree is so easy to get.
You just need to attend class.
In the past only smart people can go uni.
Now everyone is a degree holder.
So please go and get that part time degree.
The earlier you realise this. The better.
Your certifications will help.
But corporation like ST values which degree you are.
No choice.

Once, I asked an interviewee why I should hire him for an engineer role (he came from somewhere that works like ST) and his reply was that because he has a degree. (He got a distance learning degree on top of his engineering diploma). So I followed up with a second question. "So how do you think your degree is going to value add to my team?" To be honest, I was trying to test his brain reflexes by pushing him hard with his own answers. Auditors do that all the time. If he can't catch that question with a convincing answer, he will end up as the weakest link for the auditor to overwhelm us with Nonconformities. This is only known to us by experience, something you cannot learn with a degree. He was caught completely off guard with the question and couldn't reply coherently. apparently he didn't think it through before he took his degree. In the end, I hired someone from China who spent years in the US before returning to Singapore to keep his PR.
That diploma poster asking about ST is already making higher and doing better than what ST will offer him. I believe he has the wisdom to see that. It is just plain stupid to systematically limit your staffs potential who otherwise will help drive your organization higher and better. Even with a degree, there is no guarantee that he will do better than what is he doing now. What puts people ahead in the real world are:
Competence
Good Reputation
Consistent Results delivery
Good Communication
Teamwork
EQ
Integrity
Pragmatism
Critical thinking
Humility
Continuous Improvement and Learning
Let's see... Which of this is a common trait in ST?
(I don't come from ST and will never consider ST)

He is not from ST so why not? You don't need a degree to become a manager or director. What you need is to know the right people, know how to behave, know what you are doing and need to do and finally deliver results. The degree/diploma/certifications are just tools that communicate you had that training, you still need to prove yourself in the corporate world. Do you mean your journey of productivity ends with a degree paper? How Pathetic. No wonder you can only stay in ST, don't come out, you won't survive outside.

All managers are useless la.
Degree or not.
Know how to behave also is two face managers.
Know the right thing to say also just words. Become manager who just make empty promises.
Managers don't care about you la.
Manager only care about keeping their job.
Getting promoted while getting YOU to do the work for them.
Mcdonalds manager does more than all this corporate company managers
