Should a degree holder in marketing take up a job in established security firm?

Hi guys,

Im new here and would like to seek advice on whether taking up the position as a cisco auxiliary inspector as feasible? From what i heard, the basic pay is $2800 excluding all allowances. Do you think its a fast track to earn or are there better job offers for a degree in marketing grad? Please advice guys. Thanks alot =) :)

there are alot of marketing related positions available in retail, automobile etc etc. Why tie yourself down with a dead end job. $3500 in a dead end job cannot beat 3-4 years experience in a marketing-related job with lower pay.

Thats quite true as what you mentioned but did planned to earn cash fast and would like to do small business... i guess marketing related jobs can only fetch around 2.4k at most right?

If all you care is making fast money, be an escort if you're a hunk or babe. Else I think you can drive a taxi - the smart and hardworking ones can earn up to 5k a month.

is the situation so bad?

Hi, I'm still studying in NUS.

Is the situation so bad? I thought the economy is recovering fast?

Hi Zhangfeiz,

1) You are right, most entry level marketing jobs would probably not get you more than $2.5k a month.

2) Seems like you are not keen in acquiring experience in marketing, but would like to accumulate enough cash fast to start your own business. Whatever business you are planning to start, it would be good for you to work in the same area for a few years before striking out on your own. There are a pitfalls in every business, no matter how easy it seems.

Dear Husky,

I think you made a good point there. It is true that every business would have its own pitfall and having experience in that line would be beneficial.
I would definitely take your point into consideration. Thanks alot =)

hmmm... ok i'm a very "safe" kinda guy... so honestly i do feel that u should have a solid contingency plan .. like what if your business doesnt pick off? then will u still be happy in cisco? i feel that although marketing doesn't seem very prospective at entry level, at least the career progression looks better (to me) than cisco... anyways spring singapore is giving some kinda financial aid for people who plan to start their businesses but the catch is u gotta meet their criteria... can check it out... oso i fully agree with husky that it would be beneficial to get a job related to the business you wanna start... just to learn the ropes and stuff...

zhangfeiz 27-07-2009 12:44 PM

Yep momojojo, got ur point and duly noted.. but there is also career prospects in cisco such senior inspector and director if im not wrong.. Don't get me wrong as im not trying to promote Cisco here in anyway but thanks for letting me know that SPRING is offering financial aid and u are right that business plan might fail. Thus, my plan was to get money on fast track and start my own investment portfolio on low risk first to generate further income. As for business wise, im actually thinking of starting something which my parents have experience in which is food and beverage industry.

What plans do u all have guys? Perhaps we can care and share here =)

I am still trying to rack my brains to think of something :) IMHO, an ideal business plan would be one that is

1) be in an industry that you are familiar with
2) yet innovative at the same time

I don't believe in starting something that everyone else is already doing then fighting for a small piece of the pie. Not say impossible, but very hard at least where my industry is concerned. If I were to say open a small little retail pharmacy for e.g. There's a G, W or U everywhere!
