No need for technical expertise in commodity to be commodity manager.
I was a electrical commodity manager, its easy to pick up if you mingle with your vendors a lot,do more research, get your supplier to present to your their products, road map.
I was a commodity manager for elect. for over 4 years, but I was only earning 7+k a month.
I have since switched commodity recently to IT and also changed industry. I did not suffer a pay cut .SImiliarly, apply the same common sense and eagerness to learn. Work closely with your vendors and internal stakeholders to understand what they need.
From my switch I had a 4digit pay rise and I am not technically trained I all the commodities I do. also, there seems to be a lot of jobs out there as I am frequently called up for interviews
