[NEED CAREER ADVICE] Pertaining to Psychology

Basically, I studied a Business Course in Polytechnic.
I'm a Diploma with Merit Holder but I couldn't get
into the course of my choice which is Business.
NUS, NTU and SMU did offer me courses which I applied (3rd, 4th choice)
but all pertaining to IT and Computing which is not what I wanted.

So, I decide to work full time after I ord with a Diploma.

I work in the Civil Service under one of the Government Ministry pertaining to counselling.
With a Diploma, I know that I can't go far.
My plan is to take up a Psychology Degree in UniSim
and rejoin them to either be a counselor or psychologist depending on my results.

So hopefully after completing my Part-Time Degree in UniSim,
I would have 4 years working experience in the ministry under my belt and also armed with a Psychology Degree.
(as I work while study and approximately take me ard 4 years)

Can anybody advice me on my career route?

Is it wise if I do it this way?
If I plan to take up a private overseas degree, the cost would be higher.
Which is why I opted for Psychology Degree in UniSim.
Afterwhich, I will continue with MASTERS upon completion of my Bachelor's Degree.

Sound like a good plan, esp if you know what to do and stick with it. The only advice is to check with the ministry's HR whether they recognise UniSIM degree. So far, I've yet to see any successful UniSim applicants entering into the ministry I'm currently at.

Hi, it's good that you know what you want. Just for your info, most likely you won't end up as a psychologist in the civil service after finishing your UniSim degree because they only take in minimum 2nd upper class honours psy grads from local unis. It's very competitive for the few vacancies. You would have a chance if you have a Masters though.

Counsellors in ministries do not require a psychology degree per se. But the practical experience you're gaining now is useful for helping you to get other psychology related jobs in future. If you manage to complete your Masters in future, maybe you can set up your own private practice/clinic once you gain enuf work experience.

You could also become a tutor in universities or lecturer in polys as well.

Hi. I've check with my HR side long time ago before I applied the course.
As for now, they said they do accept UniSim degree.
In fact there are numbers of UniSim degree holders working in my office for now holding a Psychology Degree.
In fact, my own boss is a Unisim Degree holder
Varies from ministry to ministry actually.
Some ministry are flexible in employing pertaining to the degree one has.
So yup.

Hi. Thanks for the advice. Yup. I undertstand that local university had different awarding system as compared to UniSim. I have some colleagues who have local uni second honours and above working as psychologist here and also unisim degree holders working as psychologist too.
Unisim degree has diff classification for its degree. With Honours or general degree.
Apparently those with honours are also classified under psychologist.
So its like under the same level with local uni second class honours and above.
Again. Like I say depends on the flxibility of how the organization wants to recruit its employees.

Counsellors are not Psychologists in the civil service. U're saying u have colleagues who hold the official job title Psychologist with a UniSim Psy degree (no masters) in govt sector? I.e they do statistical testing, design psychometric tests, research etc (real psychologist, not counsellor)

Yes. They hold the title of psychologist. Instead of MX, they are under HTS scheme. They are not masters. They did research though. Some of them are taking up their masters part time programme. Those who are counsellors are under MX scheme.
