Default Business Development Manager at Maybank (SME sales)

Hi all, I was working for a bank as a credit officer processing SME loans. I am thinking of joining Maybank as a business development manager (basically corporate sales to SME). I heard from some people I know that the basic is quite decent ($3k) and commission is on top of that.

Mainly have a few questions about this position from those who work as BDM's or used to work as BDM's in Maybnk:

1. How much is the commission like? e.g. for BTLs. How many % of the BTL loan?

2. Are the working hours long and often work on weekends?

3. is the sales target achievable and what are the repercussions of not hitting the targets? (e.g. dont hit for 3 months = sack)

another question: is the job something in which I can carve a career in the long-term (e.g. chance to be promoted to maybe a less sales oriented role) in the future? don't think I will still want to be running sales when I am 40 plus. haha.

thats why I asking questions to find out more. If I am sure I am ready for this role I wouldn't have to ask right?

btw there are different type of sales roles and doesn't mean u not suited to sell insurance to individuals only equals you confirm not cut out to do corporate sales. different selling point, different clients from different pools with different needs. Approach also different.

thanks for the useless comment anyways which doesn't educate me more on the job requirements at all.

Sounds like a know it all. Good to show your true colours before I wasted my time to give you value. This is all you deserve.

know it all? haha. If i knew it all would I even post questions? if u wanted to give value you would've instead of just giving a snide comment in your first reply and dismissing my interest to learn more about the role by saying that im just "not cut out for sales".

the questions I asked is so I can be a better judge of whether I can perform the duties required based on my commitments and personal attributes. I took offence cos u were so quick to judge and generalize me before I even had more information on whether I am suitable for the role.

guys.. no need to fight. a forum is for all to learn and share experiences. I agree though that if nothing nice to say just don't say it. Just a waste of everyone's time and creates hostility.

anyway, I was a business development manager in Maybank. I would say I seldom ever work weekends as most of the bosses want to meet during their working hours. Vast difference between consumer cause consumer sales you will meet your client usually after their work or lunch time and weekends.

I transferred there after a backend ops contract position in maybank. my basic pay remained the same when I transferred but on top of that there was commission.

I don't know much about this role but I am working in credit in Maybank. What I know is from the sales persons that I work with when they submit loan applications to me. I know that they do cold calls to prospect for clients so it is definitely not a breeze or walk in the park.

Work-life balance. I believe they seldom work weekends. Alot of time is also spent doing admin to submit to the credit side where I work for us to approve/reject the application. I believe most of their "OT" is to complete this as we sometimes get new cases coming in first thing on Monday morning. This is not often though so I guess they don't really work that much on weekends.

However, I do know of one lady who started working as a business development manager here and either did not do well / did not like the job. She transferred to the HR department after a year or so. This shows that not everyone is cut out / likes sales roles, though it may be more lucrative than backend / middle office positions.

I am too thinking of transferring to SME sales but I have yet to find out more details from HR.
