Default Advice / Opinions needed

Hi all
Would like to seek some insight from you experience personnel out there.

Im currently working in one of the Financial Institution in Singapore. Drawing only a mere $2.5-$3k. This pay was given using my Diploma.

Simultaneously, I am taking my part time degree with 2nd upper honors expected at SIM, UOM. Given the vast majority of people getting 3-4k salary, i'm wondering how should I eventually move into that category upon my graduation.(which I will be in a few weeks time)

Am I quantify to qualify for those MA program in the bank? What I heard was those program are for the ivy league players. Not exactly sure I can break in or even get past the HR resume stage.

Incidentally, I had applied for numerous application with many FI for a few months. Of course, the reply was little to none.

I'm kinda pretty much lost about my whereabouts and in term of career progression, I sort of seems like going no where.

Any sound advice would be very much appreciated.

Thanks and regards

MAP - Dun waste time, not gonna happen

3-4k salary - Possible given time as career ceiling is now higher. But if your intention is to just march to your boss/ hr and demand they up your pay just because you bought a degree, then again dun waste time, not gonna happen.

No reply after sending SIM CV - A lot of full time SIM grads are struggling to get into a proper perm position even if it's a BO one, so not surprising for a part time to get nothing. A lot of SIM end up in companies that provide outsourcing services to FI, you might want to try your luck there.

Just be patient & keep applying, but be realistic of your expectation also. You can't just buy a part time pte cert and expect to cruise your way to greater heights after that.

Sorry but what does BO stands for?

Are MAP really that distinguished?

Erm are you for real? You work in a FI and don't know what is BO? MAP varies depending on bank, some like GS / JPM are very prestigious whereas the local banks tend to be easier to get in. But even local banks like DBS / OCBC will not recruit a part time pte deg grad, you are just wasting your time there.

I doubt you can even get into a local bank's entry analyst/associate jobs, might be better to go with non-banking FI like insurance, brokerage, finance company etc. still got hope.

Well, if your BO relates to Back Office then sure.

Not exactly sure of the crude hospitality over here. But no worries, I do appreciate the honest opinion.

Thank you.

forget about MAP. Each year they receive up to a thousand applications from local or ivy uni. they have no lack of candidates and ur pt SIM will not even get pass the HR.

and no employers will match ur pay base on your degree. Meaning, ur employer will not pay u more to do the same thing. The only way you can get a better pay is to find a new job with more responsibilities.

Also, vast majority of LOCAL uni grad gets 3-4k. NOT majority of uni grad.

I think we're done here.

I'll be sure to take your myopic view seriously.

And here comes the denial mode. People often don't like to listen to bad stuff don't they? Even if it is true.

Seriously take a moment to think logically. If there are no differentiating factors between Ivy leagues from local Unis, and from local Unis to part time degrees, why are people wasting time, money and effort to get into the best they can?

Naive to think getting a SIM degree = uni grad just like others from NUS/NTU/SMU, or overseas universities. Not to be discouraging but most places will consider SIM degree as in between a diploma and a local uni degree. Doesn't mean you can't find places that recognise you on the same level as local uni grads.

And like already mentioned, getting a degree doesn't mean you will get a free 1k pay raise at your current job. Time to polish up your resume and start applying for jobs right now. Waiting until a few weeks before your graduation is too late, most local uni grads start applying for jobs 1 year before graduation. Expect that you may be stuck in your current job for a few more months during the job application process as most of the time it takes 1-2 months to go through the interview process.
