is it easy to make the switch from pte to public sector?

i'd like to ask if people reading this thread have experienced switching from pte to public sector.

was it easy or a complete culture shock?

Dun bother if you are not a local grad.

I happen to apply for a same job position as my friend. He is a local graduate while I have a pte degree but with more years of managerial experience than him. In the end he got the interview while I wasnt even granted any interview. I know him very well and he shared that he asked an even higher salary then me!

Needless to say I found better job offers at the pte sector eventually.

Did he eventually get the job? nope he didnt clear the interview. My point is, its still the same in many govt organisation, they still place priority over local grads and we can't blame their HR. For a single position, they probably screen hundreds of applicants and of course their bosses for sure will grant interview to local grads because they cannot answer if they recruited the wrong persons with dubious overseas degree. Especially lately with such rise in scrutiny of fake overseas degrees etc etc. I dont think HR will be put their own heads on their chopping board with such risks. Seriously cant blame them.

am a local grad.

but my question is more on the differences experienced.

my current workplace in pte sector is rather "slack".
understand in civil service is more rigid?

just hope if anyone has made the switch can share some insights.

Total culture shock from private sector (6 years) to public sector.

Usually it is the people moving from public sector to private sector who has the culture shock. And it is also more difficult for them to move too as most skills are not transferable.

How many years of experience you have in total?

agree with this.

also, it depends what role and what sort of company you are working for right now.
for example, changing from a big fortune 500-type MNC to a small stat board would be very different from changing from a small private SME to a (relatively) fast-paced ministry like MFA.

i guess it's easier to switch from pte to public but not public to pte...

if worked for 10 years plus in the civil service..like age 30s...what job would still be available in the private sector that uses effectively the skills gained from public service? i doubt so..

Depends what you have been doing in the public sector. If you're reading newspaper, going for long lunch breaks and surfing internet all day then obviously don't expect yourself to be very useful in the private sector. If you're doing real work then the private sector will gladly welcome you. I know a few who have switched out and they have successfully continued their progression up to the top in the private sector.

One's potential and success is not limited by where you work and those who work hard are able to achieve success wherever they are. If you're stuck, sometimes you have to look at whether you are the problem, instead of blaming the organisation.

i work in a very slow paced sme.

stagnating.

however, i'm getting cold feet at joining public/civil service - bureaucratic way of life.
would there be lots of reporting?
endless presentations?

Depends on the culture of the organisation, and the working style of your immediate supervisor. But in general, there are quite a fair bit of writing and presentations to be done. In fact, the only way to distinguish yourself (for good career development) is to be good at writing and presentation.

If you're worried about these fundamentals, would suggest for you not to join.
