Depends. If you no kids, then die die have to work to earn money. But seeing that you did not have kids to support in the first place, you should have been able to save more than your peers with kids.

On top of that, some people work because they just want to. Not much to do at home, if your mind is active, staying at home would be a bore.

Some people dont 'work'. Their occupation is their passion. They dont see their work as a job in the first place.

I am 45 and I am already retired from working for others. But I have not stopped working. I am busy managing my own personal investment portfolio. I have to read a lot of company reports, economic news, brokers reports, etc. I have to attend AGMs too. Life is still busy but at least I am my own boss. I don't have to struggle to work, stuck in morning and evening traffic jams and report to a much younger boss who knows nothing but just orders around. Many in this forum are still working even though they are already old and in their 50s because they can't afford to retire because they are not financially independent. I pity them.

What you said is the brutal truth. Many old people like myself still have to wake up early in the morning and report to a young boss, newly minted from some business school. This is our fault as we have not planned well for our future.

We just take life as it is without much financial planning. We suffer from lifestyle inflation. When our salaries increase, we upgrade to a condo, buy an expensive $200k continental car, go to US and Europe for holidays, spend a ton on our kids on piano, ballet, lessons which serves not much purpose. It is all our own fault.

people who are above 60 should aim for position like non-executive director or something. That is to say you are using all your accumulated knowledge and expertise to advise the younger generation. If one can't achieve that it means they are wasted their entire life with brain dead working mentality.

At least you now realised your mistake and admitted it is your own fault and take personal responsibility that you will have to work way past 55.

There are irresponsible people who retired young thinking they have made it. They are the ones who will wake up too late, find out that their money is not sufficient to last the distance, that they are no longer employable and will be depending on hardworking people like you and me for charity.

Yes these are the youngsters who typically inherited wealth from their dead parents. They will quit their job and act big. The will spend the wealth on drinking, partying, womanizing, flashy sports cars, and invest in things they know nothing about. In the end, they lose it all.

This is unlike the investment savvy bankers who made their own wealth in their highly paid job and retire early to manage their own wealth. These types usually will be able to grow their wealth exponentially as they are experienced in banking and investments.
