Urgent : Going for a couple of interviews tomorrow. Need advice
Hi all,
I'm going for an interview tomorrow and have this question.
I've signed up for a tap dancing class that is on every Mon and Wed, 7 - 8 pm.
Assuming the company's working hours extend to 6.30 pm+ and I need to go off earlier (half an hour early on Mon and Wed), should I bring this up during the interview?
Or should I voice it out after they've offered me job?
Pls advise. Tks!
Nik

This is a no-brainer
If you're serious about the job, you will do what ever it takes to reschedule your personal commitments around it
This is not a thing to bring up in an interview, or even with HR after you've gotten the job
If you really feel that the fate of the world hangs in the balance if you don't attend tap dancing classes, then wait until you've gotten the job and speak to your supervisor to see if the company can accommodate an arrangement for you. meanwhile, don't expect to be entitled to anything

Tks, but I think this sort of arrangement is quite common right? As long as we make up the hours on other days. It's only half an hour, don't think it's too much.
It might not necessary be tap dancing, but could also be other stuff like night classes etc.

Seriously? You gotta be kidding me. A question like this. *SMH*
You better go for your tap dancing class and forget about the job interview. And perhaps pursue a career in tap dancing while you are at it. You may become the next tap dance star!

Hi i'm the #2 poster
it is true that this kind of arrangements may be common or that its reasonable to make up an extra hour here and there...it really depends on your company's policy.
but the point is, such considerations should not be brought up in an interview and is apt to bring into question your drive and commitment as an employee; unless you're some kinda star performer and was headhunted by the company which is desperate to hire you, i don't think you'll want to be placed in such a position to have your commitment questioned.
if you're talking about something like childcare arrangements, there may be greater weight to make your case but even then most people will be hesitant to mention it

you might want to subtly ask what the working hours are like, whether you need to stay late often and decide which you want to compromise.
there is nothing wrong as different ppl have different priorities in life. but in asia, ppl/coys tend to be less respectful of work-personal life boundaries, so you need to decide if this is the job for you. else, look for a job where ppl knock off on time. not sure about your industry but there are. just need to look around.

This TS thinks he still in school, haven't even go for interview already thinking of going off early for dancing classes. LOL.
Just a normal grad with nothing to offer first day of work dreaming of knocking off early for his hobby... If you really got the cheek to say this to the interviewer, they will politely smile and say "no prob, we'll take that into consideration".
Once you leave the room, the whole office will burst out laughing. Seriously dude, get a grip on life.

I don't blame TS' question, going by how (badly) our polys and univs are preparing graduates for the real working world.
Schools are now getting more 'soft' and 'forgiving', whereas the real world remains as harsh as it was and will ever be.
Seriously, it's unwise to even utter 'work-life' balance in an interview. I know one fren who went for teaching job interview... moving from private sector, he mentioned the draw of better 'work-life' in teaching...????? May be true, but very unwise to tell the interviewer about this.
