1. Talk to your network who may have worked with/under him/her. Take all comments with a pinch of salt
2. Research background. Basically look at his/her resume and career path
3. Take note of the kind of questions posed to you during interview(s) and other correspondences
4. Gut feel of whether he/she might think of you favorably
Most capable and ambitious supervisors will be too occupied to "mentor" though.
