Personally think internal mobility first is better option. Try and join a biz compliance team. Bank banks have that set up. Banks over insurance IMO. Internal u would get to keep hr pay as well

Hi may I know which has better prospect and higher pay, regulatory compliance or AML compliance (KYC TM CDD).
According to efinancialscareer, AML offers better pay. Is it true?
I always thought regulatory compliance is where most people in AML is trying to get into.

Yes JPM offers Shuttle Bus to CBP at Jurong East Bus Stop (not the SBS Bus stop but the one where you walk past jem down the overhead bridge)

I was a contract staff in 2016. Not sure if the timing is still the same in 2018

JE --> CBP @ 8.00am
CBP --> JE @ 6.30pm
Pls be early like 5 minutes. The uncles leave on the dot or sometimes even a minute or 2 early. :/

I can't rmb anymore sorry about that. I know that during early 2016, there was another bus service to the North (i cant rmb if it was to AMK or Toa Payoh) morning timing im not sure if its the same but evening timing was definitely the same --> this is for JPM

Perhaps other compliance staff and fellow bros can help update our friend here. :)

I'm currently working in MAS. Can confirm that it's pretty easy to move to banks as long as you work in a regulatory function.

Whether or not you can move to MAS, that would depend on quite a few things.

How is worklife balance at MAS? Need to work overtime? What is their official working hours?

What was your experience in? Based on the info you have provided, I'll go for 1st or 3rd only. Most likely 3rd for the salary sake, esp if I am young, and get another increment after contract ends (provided you have not been a job hopper)

1st for the credential and stability plus compliance advisory is a gd field to start/grow your career in. But I have friends' friends who works crazy long hours doing similar in a big 4.

For the 2nd, if it's just ops risk, not very keen. But depends on which bank it is ofcourse.

Have done ops risk as well as compliance advisory. First is alot of ****. Advisory is quite good and I enjoyed. You do have to know your stuff well though.

Seeking advice on how to enter as a fresh grad

Hi all, I'm a 25yo male who'll be graduating this May. 2nd lower Econs major. Did a 3-month temp job at $8/hour doing AML screening after my ORD :o and found the world of compliance quite fascinating as I know there's so much more to compliance than just screening. I'd like to ask a few questions here that may have already been asked.

1) What computer skills are needed to enter this field? What Excel functions do you use most in your job (e.g. Pivot table, Vlookup, Match, Index)? Is VBA necessary?
2) Is ACAMS really more recognised than ICA Diploma? If yes, is it worth spending money out of my own pocket (i.e. not company-sponsored) to try and attend seminars in order to gain the 40 credits sooner?
3) Is it likely to earn $10k per month before reaching 35yo? What's the typical progression?
4) What should I use my Skillsfuture credits on? (adding on to qn 1)

Hope some compliance professionals can help :)

1) What computer skills are needed to enter this field? What Excel functions do you use most in your job (e.g. Pivot table, Vlookup, Match, Index)? Is VBA necessary?
Ans: generally peeps in kyc/cdd function uses excel at minimal complexity(no data crunching/financial modeling), simply updating/tracking of individual cases. VBA is not necessary but definitely good to have as people in this function are not really "excel geeks/savvy"

2) Is ACAMS really more recognised than ICA Diploma? If yes, is it worth spending money out of my own pocket (i.e. not company-sponsored) to try and attend seminars in order to gain the 40 credits sooner?
Ans: u were to get into kyc/cdd for start, i would say the cert is not really necessary.

3) Is it likely to earn $10k per month before reaching 35yo? What's the typical progression?
Ans: yes, with some luck + job hop within the umbrella

4) What should I use my Skillsfuture credits on? (adding on to qn 1)
Ans: anything that interest you :)

AML professional here with 5+ years of experience. Answering some of your questions as I enjoy helping young graduates understand about the world of Compliance/AML and get some basic knowledge under their belt.

1) Almost none required. Basic MS Office skills. From my experience, it's actually more advantageous NOT to possess the deeper Excel skillset, as anyone identified to have such skills will be pin pointed or worse, moved into a pure reporting/management information role, away from the technical aspects of AML.

2) ACAMS are geared for graduates/professionals with experience in the AML field under their belt, and looking for a physical cert that has a certain standing and recognition within the industry. ICA is mostly for individuals who do not have a degree, as it is usually recognised to be the equivalent of one in the AML world. In terms of recognition, both is deemed on par by recruiters and hiring managers.

I wouldn't advise you to shell out of your own pocket in order to get the ACAMS accreditation even before you have actual experience. Firstly, you don't even know if this is really something you will enjoy or that you wanna develop your career in. Secondly, there are many avenues to get sponsorship, the MAS Skillsfuture Study Grant is one, and company sponsorship is another.

3) It's possible but given that you will be 25/26, you will either have to be good enough that you get promoted every 1-2 years, otherwise you have to job hop. I started out when i was 26 and im 32 this year, at my 5th bank in the Financial Crime Compliance space, drawing $8250. My next jump possibly next year will put me close to the 10k range at the age of 33. For reference, I have a private degree (no honours) and hold the CAMS accreditation.

4) No idea, never used mine before.

Are you investigations or advisory inside the financial crime space? Or policy governance?
Your pay seems not too bad, my guess is you’re in private banking compliance? Or another niche focus like trade finance perhaps

Need your advice and views here. I am currently in a transaction monitoring perm role and was approached for a 6 month contract KYC role for private wealth clients in a reputable US investment bank, well known to be able to pay generously. But it is also well known for its long hours.

I am unsure if I should give up my current job stability and worklife balance for the money and prestige of the company. Any advice please?

It's alright for the level I'm at with my years of experience. Probably top 20% of my peers.

I'm in the CIB space. Advisory.

KYC 5 years experience: 96 to 105k p.a depending on bonus.

hi..

yes, US big banks are always known to hire such staff. then subsequently, these staff find roles elsewhere.

Things to consider:

- your age. Young then go for it, old then out of question. assume you're the former.
- prospect at current role. stay can get promoted? or stay 3 more years also same rank and scope?
- stability/conversion rate: there is a risk u may be jobless for a while after 6 months if they don't convert. can u afford this? flipside, I know some who are contractors and get converted/find perm role jobs with high base salary (Given contractors are usually paid high base)..are you willing

end of day, see what u chase. if u chase money, one day u will think worklife is more valuable. if u chase stability, then choice is also obvious.

all the best!

7800 is very good given you are 27. How many years of experience do you have?

Is your bank on a high or low bonus scheme?

Oh that's nice and glad you are doing well. I'm very fortunate that I'm doing slightly better than you. Took me less than 5 years (younger than you as I'm only 29 this year) to reach $8.6k a month salary. Was super lucky that I made the right choices in every move. First 4 roles were in AML transaction monitoring. Previous and current role are in AML Advisory. All in less than 5 years.

It is very doable if you started 4 to 5 years ago during the prime time of AML hiring. Not too sure if the current batch of fresh AML analysts can experience the same career path, as AML is not as "hot" as before.

Hello there,
i chanced upon this thread while searching on the progression of KYC analyst.

Currently i'm 28, doing name screening (factiva, world check, etc) at a bank, drawing $2560 after CPF, quite low i suppose, also a contract role.

I just started this role for a couple of months and wonder what's next for me after my 1 year contract ends and if they decide not to renew or convert me into perm, what can i expect from this KYC/AML sector?

Would be glad to receive some advice!

Thank you for reading!
:)

$8.6k is very good even 5 years exp n the role. Does your company gives you good bonus?

Yeah we seem like peers that started out around the same time. Think experience level is more relevant as a benchmark compared to age, as I was grinding online poker exclusively for 2 years after i grad and earning probably even more than I am now! But story for another day.

Just curious do u have professional papers? And is your current place offering substantial variable bonuses as well? I literally just took 2.95 mths bonus and a promotion with increment of 11% which pushes me to sub 9k range. Im pretty sure im capped out right now on a experience vs pay scale... not sure what the market will be like when i look in 3-6 months time.

6 years in 5 different bank if I read correctly. wouldn't that be too frequent? or is it actually a plus in these type of roles?

it is too frequent and it's not a good thing. so far I havent had issues justifying my jumps though.

will probably come back to bite me but oh well, let's see how far it takes me!

Wm aml or cib aml? Thoughts? When talking about aml I am not talking about so called kyc officers who mostly are the onboarding team or deal mostly with documentation issues

Heyyy! I'm really interested in AML or CTF. Any advice you may offer as to where should I try to start off with?
