Update:

Looking for a higher profile non-local MNC in the same industry as next employer and will settle with current or equivalent title. (already found one potential employer)

With more exposure and opportunities, will evaluate where I stand again in a few years time.

To all those who did not get what I was asking in the first post, let's just say it was a senseless rant.

FYI to TS, in the Financial modelling industry....many company gave new grads the title of Assistant Vice President....new grads that is at 23 and earning about 3K+ per month...the title for them is so that when they are meeting clients, the clients will 'feel' better because an AVP is actually 'serving' him....

it bears not purpose for the employee itself.

We should worry and emphasise on your skillset and its relevancy in regards to your company/industry rather than what is your title. A title of AVP/manager doesn't mean a safety net. In the 2009 crisis, it's the middle managers and AVP/VPs that got hit the hardest because (no offense to those ppl), there are the most redundant.

The company cannot laid off the entire ground staff, analysts and engineers as they are the one ACTUALLY doing the work. Top management obviously won't laid off themselves, so when it comes to budget savings, who are you gonna cut? The middle management of course..

I am in the opposite spectrum of you as I don't want to be a manager and don't inspire to be (though got promoted twice but i left the job for somewhere else)...To me, reputation, skillset and your presentations skills is more important than the title itself...

In my previous job, i am the regional Administrator for the APAC region located in the SG office. My job is in charge of APAC. The SG office has another IT manager. But his pay is way lower than me and he is way below me in terms of techincal skills and 'actual power'.........

I suggest you concentrate on something more substantial and tangible than just a title.

my 2 cents.

Thanks for the advice and anecdotes. I have already decide to pursue to develop myself instead of being too hung up with the title (I did ask about what I can do/study but nobody addressed that?).

I'm just curious, it is easy to tell if someone else has comparable skills and "power" but how did you find out his pay package? I think that's another big piece of the puzzle that can put a few more things into perspective.

it depends on different environment really...different companies and environment have different 'rules' and structure....

For me previously, as I am working for regional and hired directly by the Corporate HQ in Paris while he is from SG, this automatically puts me in a different tier than him (Note: I'm no FT, I'm a singaporean too). While the local staff had to report on time, and many more rules, i am on regional and those rules don't apply to me since technically, I am not 'hired' by the local office but rather the corporate HQ. For skills, it's not that difficult to tell whether the skillset a person possessed is 'fluff' or real....

Again, different companies have different structure. I suggest you to hang around 'power' or 'money' or the little things. Ultimately, your career goal should be to create value and reputation to yourself such that.....you don't have to hope you can find a job that can match your expectation....and the companies will come and find you and match your expectation. And yes, it is possible. I've been not looking for jobs since the past 3 jobs. It's job that found me. Because i concentrate on the right thing and not intangible things.

my 2 cents.

I only care about money since first job, not interested in sensless distractions like title, MNC/SME, industry, job scope, regional/local/global, reputation etc.

I have a few passions I intend to pursue once I get enough and am on track to meeting preset KPIs by 38. I have seen enough of my peers lost focus when distracted by such nonsense - you only have 1 life to live, stay focus earn the dough early and move on to more important things in life than work.
