Hi guys, I'm going through a series of interviews right now (Pb and SME banking) and it looks like I've got high chance of getting my first step for SME banking. And yes that's what I prefer. Company is Singapura Finance. Anyone have any good tips for me to aid my consideration?

Singapura Finance is not even a bank, it's a small S&L firm. Your clients will be SME, but you won't be doing "SME banking", there is a big difference. And I am quite surprise they have personal banker positions open!? I thought they were either cashier or insurance type of jobs for retail segment.

can anyone share what does operations really do on a day to day basis? so far i always hear people saying words like processing, clearing, trade settlements. What do all these actually refer to? Also, what's the market rate for a fresh grad entering ops? Thank you

It's simply some nice words for mind numbing data entry in the bank that requires some human touch...you may be surprised that the things you learn from uni does not actually be put to much of a use after you enter ops.
Try not to go into operations if you can...basic around 2.8-3k for fresh grad which is fairly nice however progression are pretty stagnant unless given opportunities to hop around. Otherwise you will be specialized in a same job function for many years until your time to be promoted comes.

The biggest thing you'll learn there is a deeper understanding of back office functions. For example, it's everything that happens between a trader hitting "buy" or "sell" (figuratively, not literally) to the actual transaction taking place. E.g. what instrument, clearing houses, settlement rules and timing, counterparty and counterparty risk, monitoring of positions etc.

Most of the stuff is usually automated, so apart from monitoring these trades that settle just fine, your main role would be to pick up the exceptions and clear them. E.g. money transferring into the wrong account, mismatched dollar amounts, or any potential trades that get highlighted as per the automated rules.

It wouldn't help a single bit to prepare you for front office work, but there's a lot more to it than "back office" than just those 2 words.
