why are you applying for the job if you are not intending to stay the minimum service period? you are depriving other more deserving individuals, imo. you basically have to pay back their training costs and return the salary + all benefits/bonuses. i don't recall how much or what percentage.

Just wondering are there different types of contracts given out? Mine stated one year then either convertible to permanent or extended for another year.. I did sign for the three year moral contract also (but I think this is different) .. I have no intention of leaving this job (in fact I was overjoyed when I got the offer :> ) but was hoping that I was given a permanent position from the start...
Is this the norm?

yeah its a probation period, i was told. as long as we pass the training we're fine I think. Also if we don't, they'll give us another year to pass it.

Does anyone who has been offered a position know when is the starting date?
It's July now and I still do not know when I should quit my current position.

u received offer already? according to someon above, they said its end of sept. I wonder how flexible they are with taking leave during the training, as I have prior commitments before i went to interviews.. i thought my chances were over.

Yes, I signed the contract about 2-3 weeks ago. The HR lady told me the starting date is likely to be after mid-sept. But no news from them yet. Did you get the offer? You want to apply leave during the training period? IMO, i do not think it's a good idea to apply leave too soon after the starting date as it will disrupt your training and does not look good professionally. Do try to shift your commitments if you can.
