For private sector jobs, I usually try to find the HR's email via linkedin etc and email them straight. This is to avoid the black hole of the online application systems.
Is it advisable to do the same for government jobs?

Life is not easy. Yes, hauntings still exist.
Typically, the fast recruiters will even give their HP numbers.
If it is just an email address, so be it.
Many configure their official email on their phones.

Fully agree. Very often, they don’t even bother to update the application or interview progress, only when chase then get back. Quite telling of what the working pace and decision-making style will be like. A good guiding principle is if they don’t get back within say 2 weeks after application, or few days to a week after interview, for your own mental sanity assume no interest and move on.
