Met him last month and he said he did apply for jobs but when one offered him, he just backed down, citing fears of moving out of his comfort zone, even though the pay is OK.

The thing here is unless one is self-disciplined, one can get easily stuck in the environment if he/she is too long inside.

I totally agreed on sinking deeper in the comfort zone speaking from the fact that I am an ex-regular who left the force after getting my degree after the 5 years MTE.

I have never regretted signing on as a matter of fact, the lump sum of money and bonuses over the years has been invested wisely in stocks during the downturn and my education.Coming from a low income working class, i signed on my financial reason and was not ashamed to admit that.

The transition for me has been smooth and it has been 1.5 years since i left the force and now into my second corporate job in a MNC earning more than what i used to get. I guess being single with no family and financial burdens does help in that. Self discipline in your personal time and money management is defiantly the key. I have seen many regulars with poor working attitudes than NSFs which put those handful of capable and hardworking ones to shame. As the salary they are getting is slightly above of what private sector is paying, SAF has successfully create a comfortable environment or rather install a fear factor in deterring them from seeking greener pasture in the outside.

rubbish. if you stay in the pte sector after 6 years you will just be a senior executive or assistant manager with no leadership role. by sign on provide opportunity for leadership skill leading 7-9 men as section leader or 30+ men as platoon sergeant. this sort of strategic leadership skill is highly valued by companies and allow to jump over the corporate ladder to senior manager position. senior managers is not about skills or years of exp, is about leadership capabilities.

26 years old coming 27 this year. Went into banking but in back office and work my ass off. Jump to another MNC doing corporate finance now.

I went in mono intake as a combat engineer in 2003 after i finish nitec, a lot of my friends sign up to become some kind of combat construction worker, I think the unit is call PEC, now they convert to become normal sgt liao.

I went on to higher nitec -> poly -> ntu -> now Meng. My salary totally tio trash by those n level ah beng sia knn. Heng havnt tio ICT yet ar bo sure kenna suan by everyone.

Haha, it is easy (but wrong) to use just one case to give a negative impression. Truth is the SAF provides a credible and dependable career and a relatively good income for a comfortable but not luxurious lifestyle.

I will confine the discussion to graduates as this is what I am most familiar with. Among my graduating cohort in 2000, 5 chose to sign on with SAF. 1 went in under Combat Officer scheme (highest pay), 4 went in as Engineering Officers (2 as Cpt rank because they were LTA during NS, and 2 had to undergo short OCS to get LTA rank because they were NCOs during NS). This was before the MDES scheme was implemented.

Many entered the private sector, and the remaining few joined the civil service. Those joining the civil service was paid among the lowest.

Among the 5, they are still in the service and doing well. 2 LTCs and the rest majors. Dont have much info on those joining the private sectors, but heard that some had experienced retrenchment, and some had gone into insurance etc..

I understand also that SAF has extended the career lifespan of their regulars including those in combat vocations. So one can actually worked until 50 for Combat officers, and 62 for technical /engineering officers. Pay is comfortable, got opportunities for further studies / upgrading and most important of all, no worries of economic fluctuations

I got an offer from RSAF to sign on as AFE M (specialist) after my BMT.
I did not make it to OCS but I have a local university placing currently. If I were to sign 4 years 1 months as ME1-1, I plan to quit after that and study university at NTU EEE. Is it worth signing on as AFE M (ME1-1) for 4 years 1 months (including 2 years NS)?

Please help =(

No. Not worth. Go get your degree first then if wanna sign on then come back and sign on. If you sign on now for 4 years you will get diploma or a level pay which is ****. Come back after degree can get degree pay which is double the amount. If you want the scholarship, you can also sign on during uni or even after and they will back pay your uni fees. And all degree holders from local uni will get to go OCS after grad.
