It isn't common, in fact it is very rare. According to the stats it's only a few percent (like 2 or 5% that kind) that be jobless.

Receptionist is zero growth and prospects, if got brains no one will take them.

I disagree wor, you learn about customer service when you work as a recep. Can also train you to be more confident when you talk to people. Also depends what the fresh grad wants to work as when he develops his career further, e.g hotel management or any career that deals with people/human interaction, this will be a good starting point.
Can work 1 year to earn some experience then advance to a better job.

Many Singaporeans want to fly when they haven't even learn how to walk.

Better be a receptionist than unemployed. Unemployed got what experience? At least receptionist got people skills or other skills. Anyways, its true. Many Singaporeans will reject the offer and rather wait for better opportunities while being unemployed (even if need to wait very long).

Yeah, some skills are transferable to other job. Gotta start somewhere.
