When did you apply? For degree level positions? Some of the postings there doesnt look legit, no jd and no requirements.

Last week. They never indicate what level, but the pay offered is within degree range.

Yes some of the jd are very short

No updates. Like other wsg career fairs, looks like recruiters only post jobs just because they need to show something to the ministers. Actually no jobs available

so what are u doing now?

basically, i will dodge ALL SMEs with a 100 metre pole, due to my extremely negative experience with them. they cant be trusted at all. if rly die die need find FT jobs, at least go for those with some branding / reputable ones. earn lesser also nvm, at least the job stability is there and ur resume wont be destroyed by SMEs, where u have to keep redo-ing your resume every few months now and then when it comes to searching for jobs...

Hi everyone, just wanted to share some things I learnt as I was job searching:

1. Customise every job application. Look through JD and make sure you include relevant keywords, skills, experiences and substantiating info in your resume, only if they are accurate and honest of course (you may need to explain them during the interview). Write as compelling a cover letter as possible, highlighting your accomplishments, skills, experiences and enthusiasm for the position. If you have not had much luck with getting shortlisted for interviews, request one of your friends (especially those who have more experience switching jobs) to help with vetting your applications, or see point #3 below.
2. Open yourself to all possibilities – through employee referral, reconsider companies which you previously ruled out for whatever reasons, use different job portals (I’ve to add I’ve had no luck with Careers@Gov, not even shortlisted for a single interview after applying to 10 different organisations…), update and optimise your LinkedIn profile. There is little room to be picky, especially when the economy is looking so bleak or if you are jobless (and have limited savings, have loans to pay off or many mouths to feed) or hate your job, unless your skills are really in demand or the sector you are applying to is unaffected/booming.
3. Consider attending free career coaching sessions or workshops by e2i and WSG – I used a couple of career coaching sessions to prep for interview (this is not usually what they do during coaching sessions, but my most immediate concern then was how to handle interviews because I had one lined up so I figured why not. The coaches were very kind to oblige too). Free workshops on job search, resume writing and interview skills are available by both organisations, but make sure you sign up fast as there are limited spaces and they are very popular. During this stay at home period, the workshops may be limited to instruction only, in-person workshops usually include role play so you can learn through practice and get feedback which I found very helpful, but definitely worth checking out anyway.
4. Job search can be really draining and demoralising. Although I have been unemployed while looking for a job, job hunting is tiring and feels almost like a job in itself (each customised application usually took me 1.5h - 2h). By the way, if you've a choice, it's always best to be searching for a job when you are employed because you have more leverage. Also when you are receiving no news or rejections, you may feel like you're getting punched in the stomach but just keep going. Make sure wherever possible you set aside time to relax and do things you enjoy so you take your mind off your job search, speak to friends/family about your situation if you are stressed out, or post your problems here and hopefully someone will be able to provide advice.

I unfortunately began my job search as the pandemic was starting, but I’m making progress, just crossing my fingers now I’ll be able to get an offer soon. I’ll post soon about my experience on how to better handle interviews. If anyone has other experiences to share please do share them.

Keep your chin up, and all the best everyone!
