Will it affect my negotiation power? Should I let recruiter know if I have quit?
What is the mkt rate now?
Can I still ask for increment (how much) in new role? Or should I lower my expected salary (by how much)?
Thanks.

i think the longer the break off work, the attractiveness and bargaining power of a candidate declines to a potential employer or recruitor...

Job hunting is not easy. One needs to be positive despite meeting rejections.
Share my job hunting history.

I resigned from a job worked less than a year (not my first job, my previous work experiences were 2 to 3 years)

Quitted without securing a new job. Pretty demoralized back then, frequent long working hours till wee hours.
Did not know exactly what I wanted to pursue in life. While I was still figuring, I was fortunate to help a friend to set up business. During my unemployment, I did not want to do nothing. After a few months, I decided to start the job hunting.

I did not track how many resumes I sent, I went for a total 12 interviews with 6 companies over the span of 2 months before receiving an offer. Faced numerous rejections without updates of the interview status despite attended second and final round for a few. Also had recruiters and hiring managers commented my expected salary was on a high side when I only asked for my previous salary expectation and negotiable. Even had Recruiters called me to downgrade my role to just accept any job first, I declined as I did not see myself in that industry. I went for interviews experiencing interviewer telling me his success and before I could say anything, I was labelled as inexperienced. I also attended all 3 rounds and was told the position was an urgent one and I was on top of list with relevant experience, only to be told weeks later I wasn't selected. Hopes shattered.. I applied even for positions I was not really fancy in.

My luck finally came when I finally got an offer after going through 2 rounds of interview and within the same week received the job offer. The best moment, I received a significant pay increment. Really thankful to the organization for giving me this opportunity.

Do not give up, the best is yet to come.

To me, there's nothing wrong to take a break before looking for a new career. Also, you have strong experience. Do not lower your salary expectation. Do not get low balled. If organization wants to invest in you, they would even pay you from 10 to 20'% more.

Pros: 'Freedom' in office, you learn and do work at your own time without any ppl rushing you and out pressure on you. Even if you are late for a 5 to 10 mins for work in the morning, the boss doesn't reprimand you, pays you the same monthly salary. Overall, the boss is kind of 'bochap' type as long as you do your work properly should be ok.

Cons: Boss and wife who is an accountant are very stingy ppl. Boss reluctant to engage associates to help out and so work which should belong to associates level will pile up and he will engage interns who are inexperienced to do the work instead, just to save costs. Boss is very lazy, don't take calls or return calls to customers but charge customers high bills and doesn't look into the files of the customers but rely on the interns to do the job. Boss will give wrong advice to customers and charge them for high bills. Boss and accountant wife tend to do 'dirty things' such as putting customer's deposit money into their own private account first then when the time to return the money to the customers, they then return. Overall, the boss is not professional in his conduct and some customers stopped engaging his service midway as the customers felt that he is not concerned over their matter and more interested in charging bills on them.

My existing colleagues are leaving one by one soon, 2 interns are leaving in July and the other colleague stated earlier that if the two interns leave, he will leave too. The other colleague of mine is planning to leave she has stayed in the company for 9 years. Will you leave too if you were me?

I'm sorry but I totally cracked up when I saw that a perm worker is basing his decision to leave on interns who were going to leave anyway.

why are u even still there?

But isn't this like selling yourself short by 6k? how hard is it to move from 14k back to 20k in the future?

Hi, cos the perm staff is an old uncle, retired from other industry and came to our firm to continue work and upgrade himself. For him, his situation is the type who can afford to continue working in my firm or leave for other places. So, for him, when the two interns leave, he will leave too cos the lazy boss will make the workplace even more terrible. The current work loads are still manageable due to the help of the two interns but when they leave, means two workers lesser. I am getting quite scared of the fact that one day , I may become the one handling everything, doing HR work, Admin work and a professional's work. Definitely not fair for me and I am working outside the work scope. Whereas, the boss will find ways to skimp and save for his personal matters, eg. employ unexperienced workers for a lower salary to do work of a professional, incapable of giving correct advice to clients and when we are the ones doing the work and he is claiming all the credit and taking in all sorts of work when he does not even know how to do it.

Do you think i should accept the job first and search for another job at the same time? Please advise

Any updates on your job hunt? hope you manage to find one by now. Life is tough jobless... face ppl criticism and in fact no freedom to do/buy things like normal. Been tru that phrase.

Well, i been 3 mths on my job after jobless for almost a year. So far i am happy with here. Dun give up! you will find it..

I've been reading up all these for quite some time, well, 7 months to be exact. Like some of you, I HAD been jobless for quite some time as well after my last employer moved their operations out of Singapore. I didn't want to drop my salary expectation too low for 3 reasons. 1, employers base new salaries on last drawn. 2, with new drawn salary which is too low, it will take years, possibly never to get back my last drawn. 3, if all my future salaries are to be based on new low salary, I will have -ive every month (have family, a dad, bills to pay).

Long story short, I only checked jobstreet and jobsdb for jobs. Turned in hundreds, if not thousand of applications but no reply. Eventually found a job site which sort of lists even jobs from employers websites and from some small unknown jobsites. Found a job through one of the employers' websites. I think probably because not much competition as they didn't publish on those popular jobsites. So if bros and sis here want to give it a try, it is ://.rollingeggs.com

Hope you guys can end your bad luck as I did.

No job for over a year and little money. Desperate, went straight to sales of any kind. Became thick skin and thick face. Could not care how my ex colleagues or friends perceive me. Also become very humble over time.

Quit sales job, and.....became a nurse. Again many were shocked. I was once a money hungry, investment banker wannabe. Of cause I would never be a nurse in Singapore for long. Just get qualifications in Poly, did my 3 years experience in Singapore and left for Australia.

6 years ago in Australia now. I never regretted changing careers and what is claimed as wasted my finance/accounting degrees. Those knowledge allowed me to invest and save wisely, earn a AUD78,000 per annum AFTER tax income from a very safe nursing job. Started at about 55kAUD after tax 6 years ago. Now I'm AUD600k net assets. Typical savings about 35k-45k AUD a year, lived in a rented room with all bills paid for 6 years. Typical expenditure per 4 weeks now is AUD1200. But I'm earning 6k per 4 wks now.

Moving into a fully paid AUD600k apartment. Cut down working hours to 24 hours a week and enjoying the life. I still get about 4.5k after tax per 4 weeks.

Bottom line, be practical and though I do not love nursing, I did it because it is a safe job, where I do not need to be "unethical", just do your job, finish your shift, go home happy. It is never a respected job anyways even here in Australia. Many do not want to be a Nurse. That'w why a lot of shifts and demand for you will always be high. Do it for $$$. Once ya stable, u can always choose to becoming a doctor if u are smart enough to gain entry. But ya still need $$$ first.

So for those out there jobless, I do hope that this route might give you inspiration. I'm certain I'll be a millionaire in 4 years working 24 hours a week.. Be thrifty at least for your first 5 years. There are a lot of work for Nurses here in Australia, if u choose to make 200k AUD a year, its your choice. JUST make sure you've gained 3 years nursing experience first here in Singapore.

Hi, thanks for sharing. Not sure if you're still around, but may I ask which department you were in in the Big 4? Was it really that stressful?

Hi infernolord or anyone who like to advise,
Recall that you said you didn't have a good relationship with yr ex boss.
When you were looking for a job, did the recruiter or yr current co ask for referrals?
How did you deal with it?
