Explaining employment gap in resume/cover letter
Unemployed IT professional here.
Did a career switch and ended up in a disastrous job with bad office environment. Job scope was not what I envisioned, 1 day deadlines for work and was being micro-managed. Left after several months when I knew the situation is stuck with little prospect for work progress due to office politics. Now jobless for 1 year.
But spent the past 12 months on self-study and reading up on recent technologies like cloud computing, Web development etc. Also, casually offered technical advice to other IT professionals online.
How to best address this employment gap in the resume or cover letter? Add an "Hobbies and Interests" section to highlight how I spent my 1 year? Add a paragraph in cover letter explaining why I spent 1 year thinking through my options?

You can learn to drive and be an uber or grab driver. You will meet many executives in CBD and can pass them your resume. Make sure you speak and dress well to impress them. If you are lucky to meet the right person, you could get your dream job.

You left without securing another job ? Just honestly tell them what you been doing relating to IT. No need to add the 'Hobbies and Interests' one la. They are not interested.

Will you be angry:
Boss ask you to manually bring some documents for translation and the translation office is just a door away from your office. So after you have done, you go back to your usual work routine in office. Then numerous email correspondence between the boss and the translator and copied you in. Then you thought that is it. The boss 'settled' with the translator himself. Then subsequently, no head no tail, also thought it is the boss's personal matter so never kaypo ask anything. Then no head no head some random instructions from the boss such make copies of the translated documents and then pass to another colleague. Ok all done. Then today, feel and heard the 'rustle and hustle' between this colleague and the boss like they are busy looking through the translated documents then no head no tail under the boss instruction, this colleague come and ask me about the documents I manually passed to the translating office. She asked to see the email that I have sent to the translated office and I said I manually passed to the translated office that day so won't be in the email system. Boss don't believe and ask me check 'Sent Box' and I already checked. Boss don't believe. Two-headed colleague come to my computer and do a 'thorough' check on my computer to see I got send or not. Boss instructed me to go to the translation office to get back the documents so I did. Upon reaching, there was a sign put 'Closed' and the glass door could not open. I went back office to tell the boss, the boss don't believe and call the staff. Not sure what the staff told him, boss laughed and said I told him the door was locked cannot open. Then boss send the intern go take.
So angry this morning. This is just one incidence. There are lots of other just too long and I am lazy to type out.
I was almost shouting at my boss and this two-head colleague. No head no tail get all this crap. Don't know how much longer to tolerate. The only thing that make me stay is the pay.

You may be angry that your boss views you as just office boy.
But have you looked at the document you are handling ?
Is it price sensitive information ? or extremely confidential ?
You also did not mention if this practice of handling such documents is a simple pass to the office next door. Did you check ?
If you did not, then maybe you need to think about this.
I am not siding anyone, but here is something you do need to think about :
what is point of venting your frustration and your story in this forum ?

Not even private and confidential. I was just given instructions to pass to the translating office that is all.
Why cannot vent and share my story in forum ? Isn't everyone also do that ? Everyone is Anonymous so cannot vent ah ?
Who are you to say anyone wants to vent and share has to think what is the point of doing so ? What is there to think about ?
Simple post of ranting some ppl can think even more than me. LOL !

I will ask you to get lost if I am the boss and found out that you are venting your anger here, especially over such petty matter.
Grow up!
If not, continue to ask your parents to feed you and get what you wanted.
