Want to give advice to anyone considering joining the Civil/Public Service.
It is better to join a department that has a defined jobscope, preferably with some operational work.
If you join a purely policy / experimental department, half of your time will be spent playing politics because everyone and their mum are just throwing out their random 2 cents worth on your proposals. It is a freaking nightmare.
Yes, operational work can be shiong at times but you get the hang of it after awhile.
Policy work on the other hand is like all the uncles at the hawker center giving their views (of which many are nonsense) but you still have to find some way to politely tell them that their views are helpful but will not be implemented. Worst is if that person is in some senior management position. The whole project ends up being one giant merry-go-round because no one dares to tell the boss that his/her idea is either (1) dumb, (2) not practical, or (3) requires an extensive amount of resources to perform that the organisation simply cannot provide. Instead, it becomes "yes, your idea is really lame but we have no choice but to pretend to look into it although this will unnecessarily delay the project by another 3 months but we have no choice because we cannot outright decline your lame idea."

Interviewing for MHA. If successful after the interview, how long does it take to hear a provisional offer back - is it still around 1 to 2 weeks these days? And will it typically be via email or call?

It depends on the type of clearance.
Higher clearance are known to take a few months.

how long does a job stay open?
saw a contract role open since Feb this year. I applied for it in late May and went down for an interview last week. was told by HR if successful I should hear back within 3 weeks.
this week i see the role open again on the job portal as the previous one has expired.
just wondering how come they can take so long to fill a role? it's not an operational role, but a project one but I believe there must be a timeline as well right?
