Never ever give current company as reference check. Why would they give you a good reference if you are leaving them and disrupting their work. Ask HR if you can give previous company as reference instead.

As I am moving from stat board to ministry, HR stated it is required for them to process. I have suggested other references which they said it's not possible.
Does anyone know if you were to enter as fresh hire, the reference check would not be needed?

So I could enter via movement policy or enter as new hire (lose my years of service). I was wondering the would the latter choice still require a reference check.
Also, for guys if we switch over, do we retain our 2 years of NS or all the years are lost?

your 2 years of NS are counted
why would govt sector go and disregard your NS stint that is prescribed/mandated by Ministry leh
doesnt matter if you enter via lateral mvmt or fresh hire/mid career switch, what makes u assume govt dept dont conduct screening checks on candidates as part of admin procedure leh

I see, for reference checks, is it advisable to inform your reporting officer first? Since it will be assumed they will get the reference questions?

put it this way
dont jump gun 1st
u gone for interview
if the other side inform u (please no verbal, ask for writing) that they like proceed with your app and will reach out to your listed character refs to checks
u may then give the headsup to the refs tt someone from Ministry/SB will be contacting them for your reference check
if they ok, fine
on other hand, if the refs say they bz or on leave, don't force them
get someone else & at same time, tell the hiring side one of the refs not free/unavail, can you offer a replacement ref see what they say
