Most of my friends, although 5 days week, relatively near to house
but pay around $2.2 - $2.4, routine daily office jobs.

This is really a big stake.
Just that the distance is an issue..
I did mention I would like another 100-200 more to cover the transportation expenses etc.

If they give the green light, it would be $3.2!!
Should I... should I not..

I wouldn't hire you too. Your English is quite incomprehensible.

The distance is well..far! u report to 2 bosses for $3k. I guess they are paying more as it maybe hard to find ppl wiiling to work in that area.

I can imagine the workload and what may happen. Boss A tells u do to this..Boss B tells u to do another thing. Whose thing should you do first?

Having said that, take the job for the money. Not happy with it, you can still look for another.

Take the job because if you do, you're no longer jobless, it gives you income.
That should be the first priority.

If you want to quit, you can always do it later.

Dun blame yourself.. Sometimes it's the way you look.. When they dun like what they see.. Then of course the salary will be lower... Nobody can choose what they look like when they coe to this world.. it's ok..

Default Good

3k for fresh grad in a general business field in very good already. Your friends all get lower correct? Those graduated same batch as you.

Have a try at it, i do not think you can get even 2500 easily now considering the times and you a fresh grad.

Default A passport out of Tuas

My first job after graduation was at Tuas. It was a low-end admin role that had no future. At that time, the employment market was poor. I didn’t care about career prospects. I took the first ‘decent’ job offer that came along, because I wanted to pay off my debt and start supporting my folks as soon as possible. It was the start of 3 horrible years. The pay was ok (by that day’s standards), but the work was mundane, hours were long and morale was always low. Low morale was contributed by a few factors:
1) OT was a regular fixture
2) Boss was a slave driver
3) Tuas was a ‘bird-don’t-lay-egg place.
a. Taxis reject advance bookings to Tuas , especially on Friday nights. Sometimes take an hour to get through to taxi booking
b. Taxi fare to anywhere is expensive, even though it’s claimable . With booking it’s at least $15 to get to the west side.
c. Everyone working there has low morale, so it rubs off
d. So few women in Tuas (no motivation). Whenever a lady steps into a food centre, all eyes will turn t glare… even if it isn’t a chio lady

But I sucked it up and tried to learn as much of the business as I could. After the 3 years, I left for a much better known MNC, located in a better area and much better paid.

So to TS, my advice is this:
1) If you’re like me and need the money, take it. $3k is a very decent starting pay. But start plotting your exit or at least try to suck in as much as you can in the firm
2) Make longer considerations before deciding. Your first job and pay often determines the rest of your career. If you start with a low-paying, low-demand role, you risk being underpaid the rest of your life. Worse still, you build up only experience in a role/industry that isn’t going to bring you anyway.

Good luck!

No point to take up.

It takes 2hr each trip between Tuas & Simei, somemore no seat stand all the way.

Like that you need to leave home at 6.30am and only arrive back at 8pm even if there is no OT. Your $500 extra after CPF become $420, then remove another $80 extra in transport end up $340 take home...

Yes, that's right. Some of my friends have 1-2 years experience, it is quite hard to reach $3k..

Thumbs up

I live at sunbird rd. and I work at raffles place area. This alone is already quite tiring after first few months. I can't imagine going all the way to Jurong area (more than doubling the travel time) PLUS having to take bus to Tuas... (thus tripling my travel time)...

Being on the road for that long can literally burn you out after a while...

However, the offer sounds great at 3k for a fresh grad and non-autunomous university (no offence, but it's a fact that honours graduates of SMU/NTU/NUS tend to earn higher mean salary upon graduation).

Honestly, secretarial role isn't bad. In fact, if you're good at it, you can earn A LOT too! In my company, there're many secretaries who are AVP or VP (yes, i'm working in a bank) and they're earning min. 100,000 per annum at early-thirties. Also, I notice many people are more respectful to CFO's or big shot's secretaries (a.k.a. PA <personal assistants>) than even their own bosses who could be directors/vp !!

Thus, weighing costs & benefits, I'd suggest you take up the job, as a good offer such as the one you have now may not come by so often. New opportunities will surely come when you're into your job and slowly realise what you actually 'like' to do or 'want' to become.

Cheers,
Your Humble Simei Neighbour
