Good questioning technique you have.

When asked why ministers need to have super high pay, our greatest politician famously said, and I paraphrase, "do you mean ministers have to be poor?"

Hi all,

There seems to be a wealth of info here. I'm a UK resident and have been doing electronic engineering for the last 5 years. Salary including bonus is just £36.5k (British pounds) which is NOTHING compared to most. I've a friend working for AMEC oil & gas on £45k in his first year. I'm contemplating a move but not until I know the financial FACTS. I can hit £50k or so in this profession if I stay where I am in the UK. However I don't quite know what office-based oil roles would pay - any ideas? I looked at Schlumberger and it seems the first 2 years are INTENSE - 100 hour weeks on a rig in awful weather - they pay seems ok for this role. But when I check out oil & gas engineer salaries on glassdoor.com they come out as around £50k or so - which isn't too different to where I am now?

Something doesn't add up because I keep hearing about the wealth up in Aberdeen. Any help on the numbers greatly appreciated!

Also, i am wondering if the Management Associates program at the banks are good compared to the oil and gas industry...
FYI, any piece of **** can get into the FO of a bank to do sales.

-For such an excellent person (top performer out of a whole company of above-average persons), paying him 150k/annum after TEN years is low. In another more lucrative sector, he would be making much more, 150k/annum after only a few years.

- Consider the average person in EM, who would be above-average in another less competitive company. He only gets 100k/annum after ten years. I say this is also low.

- Considering that EM is a very profitable company, they don't pay their people as well as I would have expected.

<< Hence, if one is doing well in the company (consistency performing well in the top tier), he/she will be able to hit ~10k/month or ~150k/annum salary after 10 years of service. On the other hand, the average performer will be able to hit around 7k/month or ~100k/annum salary after 10 years of service.>>
Just completed 9th year in EM with total annual package of slightly over $200k.

Already making that off my passive income. Intending to use my salary to pay off the 2 cars that will be delivered sometime this week after getting COE last week. I don't know how my boss will feel when I come to work after the National Day long weekend with a bigger car than his. I may have to park lower down in the basement carpark to avoid awkward situations.
