Job-hopping within civil sector

I am unable to comment on gov sector as one poster mentioned that you current boss will know that you are looking for another post. Nevertheless, job hop is good provided you have good reasoning especially in private sector. Personally my salary has jumped 70% on the 2 occasions that I job hop. It really depends on how you sell yourself and negotiate. One thing about government sector is that they know your pay grade. Whereas in private sector, if you are lucky, you can slightly inflate your pay and get away with it if HR never ask..

Thanks for the insight. So like what I suspected, the next organization are likely to know your pay grade and probably pay you based on that?

If that is the case, it does seem like job-hopping within civil sector is almost fruitless.

My ex-colleague is one example. Till now I think she had served with at least 3 stat boards and 1 GLC.

And yes, they do cross reference with the previous stat board/ministry about the pay scale.

Any idea if she got a significant pay rise each time she job hop? I am deciding ahead if I should join an organization with the intention to stay or if a job hop might be better in the future. Just wanna assess the market

The best path is to start in civil service with a higher starting pay.. then hope into private sector after a few years, then you hope back out.. towards retirement, then re-join civil service to shake leg, read newspaper...

Yup, that is another route I would consider too. But I wonder if the pvt sector would be open to matching/exceed the salary of a civil servant with 2-3 years of experience in civil sector.

On the other hand, I would also like to hear about the experiences of others who have job hopped between civil service organizations. What sort of increment/additional incentives did you get as compared to if you had remained with the same agency without job-hopping?

i don't think one is stereotyped as a "job hopper" is he's been in the job for 3 years and more before moving on?

jop hoppers are usually those who stay in a job typically for just 1-2 years or less.

in that case then, is there any ideal duration to stay in the civil sector (just loosely speaking of course)?

Yup, I realised I was using the word job hopping loosely and didnt really intend to mean frequent switching of jobs....just switching jobs within the civil service. Thanks for the clarification.

Anyone who would like to share with us their experience in job switching within the civil service?

started working in one of the ministries abt 2 mths back, but thinking of finding another suitable job due to certain reasons, one of which is a workplace which is nearer to home so that i can spend more time on family without feeling tired out from having to commute long distance between workplace and home.

Hence i am thinking of working there for a period of time (prefer not too long) before applying another job. i am also considering applying to a stat board which require my academic specialisation awhich of course is
is more convenient for me to travel to. (cos my previous workplace is also located near there, so the location is more familiar and i can save time and cost on transport).

Thus, can any kind soul advise me how long shd i work in my current job before i start applying to the stat board or prob other pte sector positions which i have in mind without looking too bad? thanks
