Quite hard to tell as many companies give misleading job titles.

Need to look at JD details and ask questions during interview to tell the difference. Another indication is pay - specialist L&D is at least 2x the pay of training admin for the same level of experience. Rule of thumb is if exec/associate is ~3k & manager is ~5-6k then confirm is admin.

As for planning events, these are usually dump onto ops side, specialist usually wont do this kind of low level activity unless really no manpower.

That's really helpful. I mean I dont even know there is a difference in training and specialist L&D. What do you all think is the overall best dept to progress in HR then? Dealing with money/accounts is out for me.. D:

WRT to all those who respond to help on top:

I know many of you try to be helpful and I agree with most of what you all answer about L&D specialist and Training generalist. But you also need to take into account the guy’s background and not give him false impression as if he has any chance to start off in the specialist track.

To recap his earlier post, he is a 21 year old male with just a poly diploma in events management. Even degree grads from the 3 local uni with strong honors struggle to get started on a specialist track, most will need to chalk up at least 3-4 years as generalist and build up their CV before they can secure a spec job. As experienced HR pros we all know the chance of him taking on a specialist role in the next 10 years is close to zero.

To the guy who needs help:

My take is you start small by taking up HR admin roles first, go get a degree after a few years and try to get a normal entry level job in a good global US/Europe MNC. All this talk about L&D is way beyond your league now.

From where you are coming from you will need at least a good degree, a few years managerial experience as a generalist in some global MNCs and consistent high performance before you can switch over as an entry level L&D specialist.

Hi HR experienced people, anyone has experience about working as an Analyst in Mercer for their Talent business? How's the working culture and compensation like there? Thanks in advance for any sharing.

Depends on what sort of analyst, cannot generalise. Those in the data services side can only get 5-6k but if in investment consulting side can be around 9-11k.

Hi,

Data Services side meaning those forum surveys etc kind of thing? Does anyone have any experience in the actual job scope of these people? 5-6k sounds pretty attractive for an almost-entry level position.

Default Entry level C&B

Hi, I am currently doing a career transition and want to try out compensation and benefits. I am thinking of studying a grad diploma focusing on rewards management.

Any advice if there are any entry level C&B jobs out there? Or are there any companies willing to groom C&B specialist? Thanks alot.

That sounded like a very well-measured, realistic, practical and helpful reply - without a hint of disparagement anywhere.. Not sure where you're getting this defensiveness from..
