i think someone in this forum mentioned that the govt sector does not offer "real" specialized roles like c&b, l&d etc (please correct me if i'm wrong) so i'm contemplating whether i should even take the civil service route. sigh.

civil service unless ur in policy space, the hr roles usually operational & implementing the hr policy. can try to apply for specialised hr policy jobs, but i think these usually reserved for scholars or high performers experienced ppl from pte sector.

For civil service is policy HR paid higher than generalist HR? Will having a FCH from SMU increase the chance to get into policy HR?

No official pay difference between policy and generalist HR in CS. Non-scholars will join the usual MX scheme whereas scholars will join a seperate scheme that pays much higher than MX.

Almost all the jobs on policy / specialist side (not only HR) are for scholars that are not on MX. Your SMU FCH will give a few hundred dollars more starting pay, but it will still be the MX scheme. For super high performer sometimes they sponsor for further studies and the person can move into a different scheme after further studies, but very rare case.

I was from ntu comms and I find I'm having similar difficulties as you.

Somehow when people see a comms degree the first assumption is either that you're a marcomms or pr person. They don't realise media studies as a field is pretty much like a social science like more traditional subjects like psychology/sociology etc.

Hi, sorry this isn't actually contributing to the discussion about HR careers but I have a HR-related question that hopefully the more experienced contributors here can help me with.

I recently resigned from a job and was informed that I 'owe' the company 9 days of work. It's a shift job and somehow I have not been rostered as many days as I should have been or something.

Because currently the staffing in my dept is very tight and they have a hiring freeze, I'm afraid that they will request for me to work the extra 9 days further than my end date instead of simply taking money out of my last paycheck.

I die die want to leave at my 'real' end date ie. one month after I tendered, and I don't mind if they take money from my paycheck. Just wondering if it's possible for them to 'force' me to work the days I owe? Is it within my rights to opt for which option I prefer?

False information. Scholars do not automatically go into a non-MX scheme/AO etc. There are MX officers doing policy work and it isn't only for scholars. No doubt you will find scholars there but that goes for many other job functions as well.

Technically true, but this is more a result of these days different ministries and stat boards are sponsoring many people for studies. Most of these sponsorhsips are very easy to get and really don't require academic excellence or high CEP or strong consistent performance. The end result is a whole of of people calling themselves civil servant scholars without the accompanying pay and career progression expected of a scholar. So yar, nowadays many "scholars" are actually on MX scheme or the normal Div I officer in SB.

One will need to ask the old birds in each ministry what type of scholarship is the real scholar type and know how to differentiate. Nowadays I know many of such fake "scholars" in my ministry CEP only DD or SAD type.

do you mean sponsorships for postgrad studies for civil servants who've served a few years with a decent grading?

Not only mid career sponsorship which every ministry and stat board introduce their own pattern, even undergrad studies got many different scholarship schemes where most are quite easy to qualify.

eg. last time SAF scholar = SAFOS = At least BG before retirement. Now SAF itself got 3 or 4 main scholarships + each service branch and expert skill function create their own scholarship program, so we now have all sorts of SAF regulars supposedly a scholar but most of them retire as LTC or SLTC.

It is the same in ministry, stat board & other quasi gov departments as well. The whole concept of government scholar is now become a joke.

Unregistered 10-02-2015 10:14 PM

haha now public sector throw a stone also can get a scholar or some director. i find it funny the real scholars still refer to themselves humbly as administrative officer while the fake kind call themself this scholar that director etc.

Unregistered 13-02-2015 03:56 PM

now with gov emphasize equal hiring opportunity for all regardless of academic background, expect to see more of these so call scholars from normal local or private uni pop up at gov sector in the future.

Unregistered 13-02-2015 10:59 PM

In the end all that counts is how much $$$ you get paid, why people keep getting so obsess with boliao things like job titles, scholoar or non-scholar defintion? No money can say whatever scholar you like but in the end still a cao farmer.

Thanks everyone for contributing to the thread. Now I understand there is 2 types of HR generalist & specialist and will try to aovid joining as a generalist, but honestly still a little confuse difference b/w specialist & generalist.

For e.g. - is the above Nestle HR Specialist job consider specialist? What kind of specialism will it be under?

this is classic example of abusing job titles. the nestle job is a typical hr senior exec job, i.e. general hr operations side with a fancy title.

if u read the job requirements, it consist mainly of general data collation, customer service and administrative duty that don't require any special knowledge

What sort of HR consultant are you referring to? Management consultancy types would be 4-8k depending on firm and type of job. 3rd party training assistants/coordinators ~2k and recruitment agents/telesales usually 1.5-1.8k + some sort of monthly/quarterly commission.

Hmm, Its like taking care of groups of receptionist. Guess it's part or coordinator, but the role states as a "consultant". And I'm Getting a 2.2k salary plus incentives after probation. As I'm inexperienced and fresh, do you think 2.2k for a fresh diploma holder is reasonable? Like below or higher than market rate?
