How much should I ask for in an internship?

Have an interview next week at a boutique commodities trading firm. They did not ask for interns. Basically I was cold emailing them and the boss liked my resume and said he was willing to talk to me.

He could be asking for how much I want to be paid. Truth be told in this market climate, I am willing to work for free (don't wish to be jobless in the summer), gain some commodities trading experience and move on to the big boys after graduation, but I don't want to short change myself.

I was thinking of giving a figure that is not too excessive but not too low, and then I am willing to negotiate downwards. Anyone can advise or any benchmarks to share for internships? Thanks.

This may be unrelated to the industry you stated but ExxonMobil pays their undergrad interns about 1100 thereabout if iirc. I think anywhere from 700 to 1000 is reasonable. But then again, during the discussion, you should evaluate from the tasks you are tasked to handle.
