Anyone commenced PGDE in their 30s?

I'm turning 33 this year and frankly quite tired of the corporate world.

Teaching is arguably more fulfilling job, so I'm considering applying to enrol in the PGDE after I settle my HDB purchase in 2020.

Does anyone know if there's an upper age limit for the PGDE?

Seems like your salary after emplacement is quite similar to a fresh grad's. Though your promotions after that are, of course, way faster than a graduate joining the service in 2014 would have been.

Based on the figures provided it seems like doing the part-time degree and emplacement have been beneficial. I do wonder though now that they've unified the pay scales (with diploma holders starting lower on the same scale, rather than having different tracks entirely) how the typical progression for a diploma holder would be.

Had at least one classmate in NIE who was in his late 30s. This was almost 10 years back though, so not sure if anything's changed.

I have friends who were doing their part time degree half way when the new policy was intoduced ..

e.g. Dip Ed graduated at 2007, promoted to 2A1 in 2012. After the change of policy, become GEO 2 .......

MOE really treats dip holders poorly even though they do the same job as degree holders. I'm 27-years-old male, starting pay was $3.9k when I entered NIE PGDE in 2015. I had first class honours from NUS. Now with 1.5 years trained teaching exp, I've 4.3k. How is it that a teacher with 10 years of exp is only worth $500 more than a teacher with 1.5 years of exp???? Feel unfair for you.

If you're doing the same job and at the same standard, efficiency and aptitude maybe MOE is the one getting short changed, not the dip holder.

Default Nie teaching

Hi everyone. Thanks for the informative posts. I really learnt alot about the realities of teaching.

Am an accounting grad with 2nd honors from a UK uni. And currently in big 4. I really want to do teaching. Why? Because i did not learn accounting to climb the corporate ladder and "mould" numbers for the clients' needs or the boss orders.

My calling has always been in nonprofit and human development. Its not my ambition to be a millionaire or a CFO. I have spent a few years doing work in education and research at the local uni and healthcare for charities. Yes i have done my stint doing tuition to earn a few bucks and i love coaching others at the workplace, but i'm sure it doesnt compare to teaching per se. Hence, i just wanna do teaching to help and develop the young.

My questions as follows:
1) does nie only take local uni grads?
2) im 30. Will age be an issue?
3) is it difficult to be selected by nie? Do they have a high number of applicants for the limited positions?
4) is there a demand to teach principles of accounts (POA)?

Default Mid Career Switch

Dear all,

Recently I was notifyied that I will be shortlisted for the position for non-trained teacher position. I have about 10 yr experience in IT/project management with a local 2nd lower class degree and last drawn about $6.7k. May I know what salary should I expect while I am in NIE and how fast will I be able to progress?

Btw my preferred role is to teach PE. Appreciate any PE teacher to share the workload and experience with me. Thank you all!
