Smart ones are those who speculate property, let the idiot tuition entrepruners wanabe set up their office/centres, take all the risk of business failure while you sit behind shake leg and just raise rent every 2 years.
Tested & proven for the past 10 years.

geo 1.1 to 1A1 increment after last months adjustment?
Hi guys.. I'm just wondering if I m shortchanged. I'm a male math teacher in a sec sch posted to the school after NIE in June 2011. I've a first class honors, performance average to slightly above average.
I got promoted from 1.1 to 1A1 this October. Last month when they announce the 8% increment, it seems that 1.1 will not get the 8%. But there was a clause in the intranet circular that states newly promoted officers in oct 2012 will be eligible for the 8% increment.
Of cos I was delighted. But in the September pay, I didn't get the 8%. So I thought perhaps it will be reflected in Oct pay tgt with my promotion. I just found out yday that my new 1A1 pay is only increment of $500, which suggests that actually I was not given the 8% adjustment? Cos some officers told me last time their 1.1 to 1A1 is also $500.
Am a bit disappointed la, but will not affect my passion for teaching. just wondering, my increment of $500 is likely due to MOE not according me the 8% adjusment, or do u think they have accorded it, just that my performance is maybe bad so increment low? Any opinions?

As for progression, what I hear is that it's not that rare for officers to max out their payscale… I'm nowhere near that stage yet so can't give any first-hand info, though.

Am I right to say the following rank of teacher?
NIE(trainee)>>Trainee pay scale
After pass out from NIE>>GEO 1.1 ?
After 1-2 years of actual teaching>>then promoted from GEO 1.1 to GEO 1A1
and so on to 1A2...1A3....etc??? True or False ?
-------------------------------------------------
Also, is the promotion from 1.1 to 1A1, $500 mean (Annual increment + promotion increment), or is the $500 is solely promotion increment??
please advise

Pretty much correct. Trainee pay scale is GEO1.2 if I remember correctly. This is for the graduate track (GEO1), of course - diploma is on GEO2 track.
$500 is just for promotion increment, though my actual sum was actually slightly less than $500 (maybe around $450). It's easier to see if you get promoted in Oct, since the annual increment comes in Apr (so you can see the two increments separately).

Not too sure how your friends are getting 6-10% increment annually. I was comparing notes with a friend, he got around 6% as an A-grader (which is very rare) and I only got 4% as a B-grader (above average). I got around 2% as a C-grader (average) the previous year. We're both relatively early in our career though (first 3 years), maybe things change later.
Also, I've no idea if increments are actually percentage-based, if it's a fixed $100 (average) annual increment? Generally, annual increments aren't particularly large. It's a comfortable enough salary, but can forget about becoming rich through teaching alone!

Historically the range increase a few % every few years, but it does not seem to gel with all the stories I keep hearing from my teacher friends about easily getting 6% to 10% yearly. At that kind of rate they would have hit the ceiling before 40 yrs old. This situation is much worse for an average performer who retires at GEO1A3 max of 7452.

To get rich as a teacher, you must start a tuition business and enlist franchisees.
Not easy, but parents like the MOE credentials especially if you're head of department (some even fake it, but I'm not encouraging you to do that).

I think that if you are promoted in Apr, the increment of ~500 includes your yearly increment. Oct increment only includes the promotion increment. If you are in doubt, call HR to clarify.
