Just to share with those interested. I have been teaching for about 12 years since I graduated from NUS. I don't hold any leadership position or posts in school. I'm an average performer who gets the standard promotions that come every few year so in other words, I'm just your basic teacher. I think I'm almost at the top of the pay scale for a normal teacher (Can't really tell after the changes this year. I was at my max on the old scale though). My gross pay is about $7700. Honestly if you include the employer's CPF contribution, 13th month pay and various bonuses, the total pay package for a normal teacher can easily be above 100k per year. That's not a bad deal given the fact that its a recession proof job. Still if you are in it for the money, its doubtful that you can last long. I've had so many friends who couldn't take it and have already left teaching. So do think about it carefully before you decide. It's painful to go to work when you really dislike what you are doing.

Why your gross so high!!! NS right?
Mine is $1000 less and I've worked longer. Sian...

Teaching is only 40% of the job, the rest is events organizer that starts with meetings and meetings, "damage control" like what the writer mentioned, dealing with unreasonable parents, etc. If you are going after money, it's the wrong place, especially if you are young and ambitious. Somehow and for some reasons, there are more children with family problems these days, may be due to our high stress society? This is even evident in the elite schools where some students are very bright and scored high in PSLE, got admitted but they cannot perform when they are in secondary schools due to parents divorce, fight, debt problems, etc. This was shared by someone I know. So teachers have to come in to solve the problem....to ensure those bright kids do well in schools and don't fall through the cracks.

Yah... it's a passion that has been forced into a career.
You have to reconcile that those who climb the career path will have more pay and less actual work. They just plan and deploy, while you continue to burn and carry out their programs.

Well, I know the feeling.

For us, the pay structure also have PB bonus and one-off pay increments and adjustments. That is why even though our gross and increment may seem low, our overall average is not bad. It's their way of not being tied to fixed salary structure but performance-based structure.

12mths + 13th mth + mid-year bonus + end of year bonus + PB.

Any teacher care to comment on this?

May I ask if you have a honour degree? What class? Have you ever gotten a D grade?
