$4340 is indeed the max of the untrained teacher's grade, based on the info I found in the link below (page 22). Untrained teacher grade is actually GEO 1.2 and not GEO 1.1 (which is probably a fresh out of NIE grade). For mid-career teachers, they can possibly skip this GEO 1.1 grade and go straight to GEO 1A1 upon finishing their NIE training with further increments based on previous postings here.

Salary scale for GEO 1A1 onwards below, as posted earlier in this thread.

GEO1A1: 3380-5540
GEO1A2: 4450-6912
GEO1A3: 4806-7452
SEO1: 5184-8316
SEO1A1: 7236-9288
SEO1A2: 8748-11232

I wonder what's the best time for a mid-career pax to join moe, so as not to take such a huge paycut. I heard that 4340 factors in a maximum of 4 increments? Can anyone verify?

From what I know, with at least 3 years experience, you could be appointed the GEO 1A1 grade right out of NIE, as compared to GEO 1.1 for those with less than 3 years. So you would skip a grade and probably get higher increments after NIE with 3 years experience. So I think 3 years might be a good time to make the jump if you are looking at a minimal pay cut, if at all.

Depends on your last drawn salary too I guess? You could have 3 years of experience but already earning more than $5k, or you could have been working for 10 years but only be drawing $4k.

That said, if you have more years of experience, you would likely get increments much faster after a few years of teaching, so it would only be the initial paycut that would be drastic.

I'm not sure if $4340 factors in 4 increments though. Would depend on your initial degree, i.e. if you have only a pass degree (starting pay $3010, without NS and any experience), it would probably be more than 4 increments to reach $4340.

But since those who completed NS gets about $300-$350 increment, I would guess that each increment is about $150 for 2-2.5 years of NS. MOE recognizes only 80% of non-teaching experience, meaning this figure might be only 80% of the increment you would get with teaching experience.

So in the case above, where the poster had 11 years of experience, he probably would have gotten more but was capped at the salary max.

I've taught before and I like teaching, so I'm seriously considering to become a teacher. I would like to know about the starting pay, but MOE website gives a range instead and the teachers whom I know are not quite sure. So I thought of this forum as a try! Thanks in advance!

I grad in 2012 with first class hons, starting pay during NIE was $3505, post NIE was about $3700 :)

29 year old male. Did my degree in NIE. (hence NOT from PGDE but from the Degree Programme)

Graduated in 2012 with first class honours, along with some academic awards.

May 2012: GEO 1.1 (4.1k)

- in between this period, I had my yearly increment + MOE-wide increment -

May 2013: GEO 1A1 (4.3k)

Oct 2013: GEO 1A1 (4.9k)

Oct 2014: GEO 1A2 (5.3k)

Salaries are usually scaled to honours. Just like mindef. The difference between a First class and a third class can be around 1k. And thats just the starting salary!! FCH holders will progress faster, get more increments.

Guys only get 200 more per month from NS lol.

To the guy from MOE, promotions and increments usually happen in April and not May. Btw how did your pay jump by $600 on 2013 when there were no ministry wide increments?

There was an 8% increase but that was only in 2012...

However I must say, your current pay level at 1A2 after 3 years of service is quite accurate.
