Enquiry about ST
There is no general time limit.. it all depends on the quality of your portfolio and your Principal. If they are confident, they could send you for cluster interview at the next available opportunity...
So the key question is ... are they preparing you for the role.. that is the question.. if yes.. then build up your portfolio fast.. include everything significant things that you have done in the past.. if there is nothing much.. then take a year or 2 to build up.. while portfolio is one thing.. you must learn to think like an ST.. go and read up on some literature.. identify a pet focus area related to your discipline that you want to focus to strengthen T&L.
hope i address your query.

Enquiry about ST
Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately the school that I am at is pretty much leaving it to me to do my own thing. I have to plan my own initiatives and I don’t really have very high visibility in this place. I’m assessing the situation to see if I should leave as I turned down other opportunities to come here. I had other better opportunities passed over. In addition, the furthest I can go is ST as discussed with my P because there is no base of STs for this subject.

Most classroom teachers max out at GEO 5. In fact, many do not progress further beyond that. Unless your school has specifically identified you as a ST designate, else there is no need to bother with it.

It seems like the school is not really interested in grooming you / deemed you as a ST potential since you mentjoned that they are leaving it to you to do your own thing.
Most classroom teachers max out at GEO 5. If you think the pasture is greener elsewhere, you can consider leaving during open posting

What are the career prospects and opportunities of ST track compared to SH/HOD track?

ST, SH/HOD are identified and groomed by school management..
For ST, you must be very strong with your T&L and demonstrate strong curriculum leadership. It focuses on teaching and mentoring.
For GEO 5 teachers not on leadership track, only 1 out of 10 will eventually become ST. Your school must support you, endorse your for panel interview. Too be honest, ST ship is not glamorous, except you will eventually hit SEO 1 grade similar to SH. If you are in it for the money, supplementary external private tuition would have covered way more than SEO 1.
If you are good, the school would have identified you and groomed you. No need to chase after it. Too be honest, I would rather do what's required of a Happy Ordinary Teacher at GEO 5.

Enquiry about ST
I think pursuing ST-ship is the same at most places. You have to seek your own opportunities and build your portfolio on your own. *Quoted from a very reliable source* Unlike leadership track, where to achieve a KPI, there are still JH that you can delegate out work to. There are build-in opportunities and portfolio designated for leadership track. The ST has no one to fall back on except himself/herself and lacking in "real opportunities". To be very honest, I gave up a HOD position to join this school.

To quantify, I was looking forward to mentoring duties as an ST, but the unfortunate thing is this subject has practically few or no mentees in the pipeline. So I can imagine even if I do become an ST, it will be unjust for me to just mentor one colleague. Conferences are very few and far between, unlike EMS subjects. So maybe I just dug my own grave.....

How about career progression for ST is it harder than the leadership track?
