Join CS, PS, if u are ok to be a ‘Yes’ man, non-scholars: be contented with having no progression despite working really hard and being outstanding, serving scholars who are your bosses lor.

Unregistered 09-02-2022 05:26 AM

Wonder whether this year there will be more promotions, given that there were very few in the past few years?
Some have been stuck since 2018 at GEO 3

Yup. There’s just something not quite right about the system.

Scholars will be parachuted to be bosses. Book smart. But can lead n make good decisions or not? Not too sure about that.

Non scholars will just be so-called stuck. So when they realise this, most of them will just want to farm n be yes-man, even though the policies n initiatives set by scholars cmi.

Even those non scholars who managed to be promoted to middle managers, will also slack off after a while. Cuz unlike private sector where ppl taking high positions n high pay need to constantly improve n prove their worth or risk being retrenched, there is no fear of loss of job even if they do not perform, hence breeding n encouraging laziness.

There u have it.
At the top, scholars who r only book smart n no clue what is going on
Middle managers who can afford to slack once they’re up there cuz no fear of retrenchment even if they do not perform
Bottom dwellers who see thru the system how? U will have good performers who r not recognized quitting civil service, n the other group knows their career is going to just remain mediocre, hence they rather just stay in the system n be farmers n slackers

Rot from top to bottom

Fully fully agree. The teaching service is now really rotten from top to bottom.
What meritocracy? Work hard also no use.
Work hard and outstanding but not scholar = no chance

There are a fair number. Of course, scholars are still disproportionately represented.

Do teachers have a choice of which schools they're posted to?

I was told by my P in Jan that I was being nominated by the school for OYEA. Its probably impossibly hard to win, but will this help in ranking?

no if doesnt

Unregistered 12-02-2022 07:59 AM

Nope. OYEA was for last year’s work and nomination period is after ranking exercise closes.
Only if you win, then you will be put up for Facilitated HQ postings.

There's no direct relationship between winning OYEA and getting FHQ, although it tends to be correlated because officers that are good enough to actually win OYEA will have strong endorsement from their SLs and likely have a higher CEP due to that. High CEP (+young enough age) = FHQ

OYEA is an award for the young teachers anyway, hence winning the award would likely mean the young officer is likely to have high cep. Otherwise he or she won’t even be put up for the award in the first place.

Hi, i am a fresh grad teacher. I would like to ask how teachers are selected for Facilitated Hq posting? Do principals recommend? I’m not a scholar just a normal teacher. Thank you

Disagree with your last sentence. Being nominated by school for oyea does not mean that the person has high cep. I am a KP and I know the cep of those individuals. Generally they top the appraisal basket and have more contributions compared to the others. Beyond that, they might or might not be the next in line for appointment. That’s about it.

I’ve been nominated different awards but still, I exist as a farmer.

Is OYEA or PAT only meant for scholars?

How so? Official details can easily be found via Google (on AST's website).

Unregistered 15-02-2022 05:12 AM

As in - are those who win the awards usually the scholars?

FHQ is centrally managed by HR, and the understanding is that officers below a certain age and above a certain CEP threshold will be nominated by HR. When this happens, HR will reach out to Principals to obtain some information about the officer and for his/her recommendation to proceed.

FHQ can also be triggered by certain scholar status, for example PSC scholars are usually called after 2 years in school, EMS and TS(O) after 3 to 4 years, TS(L) after 4 to 6 years as a general trend (not a rule).

Yes I'm aware it won't affect ranking from last year which is already determined. But will it help with my ranking this year for being nominated by my school? Actually it's a lot of work to prepare and document everything on top of the usual school load..

Some ROs will just mention that the JH is nominated for OYEA, that’s about it. Ultimately, appraisal is based on current work year’s contribution. Preparing for the write-up and documenting the evidence are the bare minimal one has to do after being nominated for the award. It is an affirmation and you should be happy that you are going through it. The process will also help you reflect on what you have done as a teacher. If you find that a chore, then turn down the offer. What do you expect the panel to assess you on without the paper work? How handsome or pretty you are?

Same quantum across the board for all GEO. Here are the ranges I'd noted some time back:
A 2.65-3.3
B 2.15-2.6
C+ 1.5-2.1
C 1.2-1.45
C- 0.5-0.95
D 0

TBH, like others have mentioned, you can always reject it. I mean…. If you find documenting and reflecting on your craft to be too much of a thing, and see this kinda awards w such a utilitarian lens (for pb/ranking) do you really think this is the inspiring teacher their searchin for? Just some food for thought. Sorry for being blunt.

It's been shared before somewhere in this thread. I usually google something like 'geo4 seo1 salary sg forum' to find it.

Due to the declining student intake and schools mergers, MOE is more than happy for teachers to quit on their own.

Advice for Depressed Fresh Grad (GEO 2)

I am NIE fresh grad honours distinction recently posted to a missionary school. I’m still adjusting to the school culture, quite depressing to come to work every morning where the teachers here are not as friendly compared to my practicum neighbourhood schools. So as usual I get blank stares or with no response at all upon a friendly greeting saying Hi, Good Morning or Thank You.

As a BT, I work closely with one particular teacher from my department (whom I will be replacing as she’s leaving). Whenever I ask her questions she often speaks to me in a loud, condescending tone in the staff room, especially with her passive aggressive behaviour. She is constantly rude to me like she speaks to her P5 or P6 pupils. She often threatened me l as though its the end of the world whenever I made mistakes or things that I didn’t know or rather didn’t ask.

Really in need of advice what are the things I should really take note of especially knowing that I will be taking over all her classes at the same time knowing she’s not helping at all for the transition. I really want to help my students to do well despite very minimal resources which I just started building.

Apologies if I’m rambling. Really depressed thinking how to survive my first year.

Thank you to whoever is reading out there.

Unregistered 16-02-2022 07:47 PM

Hi, just asking. Has anyone been shortlisted for an interview for diploma in education programme?

Hi! You will be fine, it will be a steep learning curve for you but it will be also be a very meaningful experience! Note how the current teacher set routines and how the teacher manages the classroom as you will have to manage the students. Good to start building some TSR. Check with your colleagues if there are existing resources that you can tap on. Do not be afraid to ask or make mistakes. All the best!
