Envious of youngsters who are book smart and get paid handsomely for it. May I ask the field you applied to?

My profile: pass degree, relevant master, NS, 6 years relevant exp 2 years freelance (Public service don't count employment that don't enter your NOA) , 4k.

Reverse engineering the numbers... If 1 Yr exp is 200... 6 yr is 1200. 4k minus 1200, my degree is worth 2.8k, my relevant master is worth nuts (HR already confirmed its worth nuts)

FCH is equivalent of 5 years experience? Oh my.. Must lock up the kids to study real hard.

and yes. so when you 'plan' for your career, you can apply for that opening but its still subjected to interviews with your prospective bosses(immediate boss and maybe also his boss). If you apply for a higher 'rank' opening, as long as the bosses says ok, you can have the promotion.

Thanks! I’m hoping to join DXO but a lot of my friends told me that joining military has no value in future. I was also thinking of career growth and progression, and it seems like it is a really self-directed in the domains.

Actually HR is super unclear about this. A job can be dx9-11. Does this mean if your boss thinks you are good, starting from dx9 there is no need for interview for the next 5 years? Assume 2 years, 2x C+ to jump 1 grade.

Thanks for explaining. So if one continues to stay in his role, he would just be a farmer? And would that mean that your current boss has to give the green light to release you too?

I think civil service considers a lot on honours (i saw it on the civil service thread) and the degree award body. They tend to pay lower if your degree is from a private institution.

So, you should get the kids to study real hard - get into a NTU, NUS, SIM, and get first class there. I mean getting FCH in NUS is a feat actually, so kudos to them studying hard!

And i think it is also broadly across civil service that masters is quite useless unless they specially ask for it - qualification requires a masters. Maybe in long term, hopefully you can promote faster with that. Haha

I agree. But one thing i know for sure... But I cannot share why as its too much of a giveaway even anonymously . I was hired for my master but I am not able to monetise it.

So indeed, hopefully in the eyes of my boss I'm a talent w relevant expertise that can be groomed, n I have an edge at the appraisals.

Actually, everywhere also no value because of specialised knowledge. Take for example, Grab, a unicorn company. Their system and AI is so specialised, which other company will pay so well after 5 years? Maybe another company pay u for management qualities but that isn't worth 10k. Maybe 6k

in audit, accounts, HR where systems are pretty much the same, then maybe can boast that you have some super efficient skills or can introduce n manage some superb system to save money...

As a mid career my advice for youngsters... Big money comes with specialisation. Don't hop here n there to learn a variety. You can learn "along the way" but don't jump field. let's say... U do 5 years of audit in Mindef.. You can also do audit 5 years later with Grab.. But along the way u learn some policy, some HR.... But u never left audit Field. So u can be hired based on 10 years experience in Audit. IF.. Your director says u have a good chance to become his SM or AD if u go for some strange course.. Then OK... Because u r being groomed... Your boss need a reason to push you up.

Just join. The high pay and job stability can allow you to amass a fortune and retire by 40 (put the fortune to work through investments)

I applied to the positions under 'Others' in the DXO page. I think maybe they put emphasis on the degree.

would you consider MINDEF DXO to be better compared to other civil service appointments?
