if given an opportunity to enter a broker shop at this moment, would you?
the poster mentioned ship broker not commodities brokering and iron ore, coal, etc are all down in the dumps as well. i'm already established on ship owner's side so no reason for me to join a brokerage firm.

Hello friend hope all is well,
My name is Amir, I am finishing my degree in international business and also currently pursuing the PQE from ICS. I have been involved in international business and trying to get into the chartering field. Based on your opinion, where is a good start to look for jobs?
I really appreciate your help and suggestions
cheers

Hello friend,
I hope all is well and you are having a great day. Thank you for your post ,it was very informative. My name is Amir and i live in Toronto, Canada. I am finishing my degree in international business and have enrolled in ICS program to work toward my PQE. i have international business experience in the past dealing with China, middle east and Africa. I am trying to get in the field of charter ship brokering and like to focus on oil and gas and dry cargo. As a ship broker and someone who started from the bottom , which direction do you suggest to go in order to get a trainee position in a company. I am willing to move to USA or the golf region since i have great links and position in those markets i.
in order to generate revenue for the company. Any help would be appreciated .
Regard
Amir

Thank you for your response , i am live in Toronto, Canada and i planning to move if necessary to United estates or UAE. Are you familiar with the market in USA? From my understanding Houston is good for oil and gas and there are lot of sip brokers in New York. Also , Los Angeles is big for containers. Are you familiar with UAE and USA market for shiop brokers?
Regards
Amir

Hi all, great thread.

I would be very grateful for any advice. I'm in my mid 40s and have a successful career as a lawyer in a common law jurisdiction. However, I want a change of scenery and the "cut and thrust" of ship broking appeals to me. I know that I am a lot older than most people entering the industry, but I am willing to start the ICS course to get some technical knowledge. I speak conversational Russian, and I am prepared to work for three months for free to get experience. Am I wasting my time, or do you think I will be given a chance? Does anyone know of people entering the game late in life?
I would really appreciate any input.

I worked in shipbroking for over 10 years. Good when market is good but now is completely over-broked and no money in it. If someone comes in like you, as soon as you left your CV would be in the bin. No one gives a sh!t about that qualification

For me it's about to turn useless all that Engineer knowledge or not.
As an engineer I know that I could get a really good salary with technical stuff in the future. And shipbroker does not give me experience for the future in engineer.

Life sometimes do that. Let's see what kind of surprise this type of job reserves..

The problem is all about a career in the future..

What would you do if you were in this position? Like.. Getting a job as engineer in a year or keep on shipbroker market?
DO NOT GO INTO SHIPBROKING THE MARKET IS DEAD AND WILL BE FOR NEXT 10 YEARS!

I cant believe you would give up such great qualifications...you are better going into investment banking with a degree like that!

What I meant was the position itself was too vague for me to do some research on it.
Is it like a freight trader or freight forwarder and etc?
Thanks in advance!
