I am trying to understand more about the work culture and office politics in Singapore and would like to hear more about your experiences working in Singapore.

What is the worst experiences you had in the workplace, what problems did you face in terms of office politics and working with difficult colleagues/bosses?

My colleagues wanted KFC for lunch, I didn't know how to decline as I was new. However I was on a diet but they insist that I eat KFC as it will give me wings. I thought that was red bull and KFC only have coke. Last time at least KFC had Pepsi, not sure why they changed I kind of miss that very much

1. Toxic manipulative boss. An insecure narcissist who appears confident but is always afraid of anyone who may threaten everything he has worked for. Such managers are the worst type of people to have around you, as they thrive on control, which may include:
- manipulation of facts to their favour (eg. Spreading gossip about employees they donít like so it appears there is a uniform narrative)
- exclusion of unfavored employees from information sources, which affects quality of work
- sabotaging of performance appraisals through unbalanced assessment of good work
- sabotaging of references (even after employee quits) to retain the upper hand and under the guise of maintaining standards of the organisation. This can be both formal or informal, the latter being spreading of negative gossip so others do the dirty work on their behalf
- acts as though norms and standards of behaviour donít apply to them, at the same time preaching to their bosses about upholding good standards

2. High handed authorities in power who persist in one sided narrative defending company, taking the side of its own managers even when they contributes to the fault.

3. Oppressive treatment of whistleblowers, even when the whistleblowers were merely responding to calls by company for feedback. The favourite technique is to label whistleblower as underperforming, as this places assessment in hands of bosses. This course of action usually results in the whistleblower having to resign due to having no other way out

4. Biased HR who take side of bosses who are their ex bosses or simply to safeguard their own position as employee. Take sure could be looking to sweep under carpet acts of toxic managers who are star performers.

5. Cowardly or two-faced colleagues who feed you gossip about toxic bosses but are unwilling to defend it or even publicly take side of toxic bosses to safeguard their own career path.

The sabotaging is very true. Was in a stat board and the previous boss lets call him Melvin decided to give bad references even though he was the one that was a bad micromanager

I hope thatís not his real name, if not some bosses Uber sensitive, later you tio defamation suit then u know.

Micromanager is not necessary toxic, it stems from perfectionism and/or inability to delegate effectively or trust others. Sabotagers send a very clear message and that is they donít want to let you off even when you have left the organisation. Feel sad for them I guess? Haha
