Sounds reasonable for a seasoned SM3, newly minted SM3 on $12k per month package have an annual comp of $165k+ thereabouts.

Not a fair comparison.
Shopee folks didn’t know what they signed up for until it’s too late.
Whereas Big4 is upfront and transparent about the progression model and hours. This thread was created in 2011. The nature of audit is the same globally. Your professors would have told you in school, your seniors would share stories with you, and even at the TURF booth they told you everything you need to know.

In my opinion, the mismatch in expectations is often due to
1) New hires not reading or researching enough on B4 expectations and hence getting a culture shock upon joining.
2) New hires read about the expectations, but overestimate themselves or underestimate the work load, erroneously believing they can handle the toughness of the job when they signed up only to discover they can’t.
3) Luck of the draw - although you read stories and get a general feel from seniors, some of us still end up better off while others end up worse off in portfolio allocation. So you may be mentally prepared for the “average” workload but end up finding you are downright unlucky and got assigned the most difficult assignments.
In all, B4 has pros and cons like most companies, and it’s up to the individual to decide if the trade offs are worthwhile to them, especially when compared to other job offers they may be receiving. High achievers from universities may also find career options which are outright better than B4 in every aspect.
