I am quite surprised. Is Accounting really a sunset industry? I grad from ntu accounting 12 years ago. Back in my time, it was a very popular course. Alot of top JC students applying for it. Fast forward 12 years later, I think my peers and I are doing all right. Still better than our engineering and sciences counterparts. I also started in big 4 for a few years and cross to banking compliance. I have many peers working in banking and asset management, who also grad from ntu accounting and doing okay or quite well. Foreign banks and local banks corporate RM, risk mgt, compliance, audit. Many also join fintech as biz development, finance roles or project mgt. some the better ones, become mgt associates or gic/temasek investment specialist. Many good paying roles in banking finance fintech are taken by biz and accounting grads. I am in my mid30s and proud to have grad from nanyang biz school. So I dun understand, issit nowadays study accounting can no longer get good pay? U study accounting doesn’t mean u have to do accounting. Is just a skill for you to join lucrative industry or organisation. I still think accounting is good. Most of us are in the range of 200-350k in our mid30s. Not super high but i know people who are machine learning engineer head and doctors and annually, old time accounting grads are earning just as much as them. So can kindly share with me what’s so bad about studying accounting or work in big 4 if that is just a stepping stone.

U said it. 12years ago. Same same. Last time a lot support. Now is flooded with avg performer and one thing is sg pawn sg. No help to current grads and ppl just prefer cheap good fast. 200k is so avg consider have 12 yoe. Heck.. some ppl 15 yoe still stuck in b4 as sm and they are happy. Not all will go into big co. And sg market is just not big enough.
Last time 7 8 yoe can easily 5 fig. Now? Dream on.. everyone having degreee and skills easily replaced with dinos sitting at top mgt focusing on their own pocket. See sgx listed co. Almost 1 individual holding so many position in sg.

I find it really hard to phantom why someone who graduated a zodiac round ago will be visiting this thread at 7am in the morning, especially if you are as successful as you claim.
What you’re describing feels like a parallel universe to me.
The hours are long, the pay is below market, and you need additional studies after graduating to become “qualified” which is only a requirement in prestigious fields like Law and Medicine. Also the nature of the work is boring.
You don’t have a social life after working hours, you don’t get to make dinner plans. Your friends share their holidays on IG while you’re OTing in some remote office in Singapore. You can’t go on dates cause you’re just working nonstop, you feel overworked and underpaid. You feel like your seniors don’t protect or appreciate you. You feel your managers are constantly chasing you for deadlines, and your seniors get scolded when the managers show up.

Cannot see like that cause you need to consider the basic pay also. You should compare total compensation instead.
Also avg is not really avg in some firms cause it’s like (for example) top 10% is tier 1, next 40% is tier 2, next 40% is tier 3, bottom 10% is tier 4 non promote.
Your avg usually refer to tier 3 but many of those are people putting in minimum effort intending to leave next year.
