However, the issue I have with the position is that I have to work odd hours. I am aware of this and I am more than willing to sacrifice my time and put in an effort but the interviewer informed me that I'll be required sometime to work as late as 2am to socialise with clients. I would like to seek opinion from edmw on whether this is common. This bugs me because firstly, from my knowledge, as a new recruit I would spend most of my time building my client base. So shouldn't I be out on the roads approaching potential customer. Secondly, as a newbie I wouldn't have any client to socialise with. Also the interviewer told me that I'll be able to earn up to $15k in my first month. It feels unlikely but do anyone know whether this is achievable? Also do you think this position is legit or it a scam?
im pretty sure is legit.... also, it is possible to earn 15k for the first month... but the interviewer probably 'forgot' to mention that the guy probably have alot of rich contacts to begin with (rich parent's friends).

and yes, the start will be extremely painful as u try to build up ur client base.... but if u make it, u will be handsomely rewarded... i know a guy, come from very humble family background with no rich contacts n joined the industry at the age of 21 (while studying full time in NUS)... by at the age of 28, he is alr earning 500k a year.... another guy from local uni, joined the industry part time while studying, after graduating, his monthly income is ard 10k. of cos, these success story are not the norm... for every 1 who make it big, 4 others will be struggling with avg or below avg income.

Gotten a perm job very quickly after exams cos I work diligently during my final year in related field, establishing relationships and gaining experience

What I'm amazed is that fresh grads these days are way out of touch
Their expectations r up the sky when seriously a degree is like just a o lvl cert these days

Agreed. Throw a stone in a street and you will very likely hit a graduate nowadays. Many who carried high expectations will later find themselves disappointed and disillusioned.

Going through this thread, there are also many who clamor for the "prestige" of banking roles. It's just blind faith. Not all banking roles are the same. Those in back office will find it extremely difficult to move to front office. Moreover, they are fighting with many of their colleagues in back office pinning for the same move. There are only so many roles in front office. Jobs in front office are usually given to the people who have relevant experience and common network. A banking role may provide common company background, but not necessarily common experience and network. If front office banking job is the ultimate goal, a first job in banking sector may not be the only path. Just my 2 cents.

Wow that's quite high! If you don't mind, what is the industry you are in?

Default Too Many Trolls

Why put others down? Because of your low self esteem? Because you are an elitist? Pte U or not, people work their ass off for it. Career search is more than just a degree. Every person is different.

I agree, there are too many trolls around. But sometimes, a reality-check is highly recommended. Just as there are many trolls that put down SIM grads, there are also SIM troll grads here that inflate their own salaries. "Fresh UOL second lower 4k no exp" that kind where you know are totally not true. Because this leads to crazy high expectations that cannot be fulfilled.

When I grad from SIM last year, i took the first job that had a good environment and was paid 3.2k. Although it was 5.5 work week. While some of my friends couldn't find jobs for 5 months after grad. When I asked them why, I found out that they were asking for 3.8k and above and had super high expectations. I mean, having high expectations is good, but one must also be realistic. Because they've been fed so much lies on forums like this, they really believed that they could get such jobs. And because of that, they probably turned down offers that most people would consider good.

Its sad that SIM does not want to conduct graduate employment surveys like the local universities, at least then we can have a truer reflection of graduate salaries.

Sure, the degree means nothing, its just a piece of paper. But when it comes down to knowledge, I don't think I can say that what I learnt in 3 years in SIM ISM is the same as what an SMU IS grad has learnt in 4 years. Because hell, they took 4 years, and took more modules than me.

But its because of this, that I knew that I had to do something about it and taught myself other skills and computer languages. My younger sister was in SMU IS at the same time and I made sure that I knew just as much as her, sometimes going through her notes and tutorials once she was done with them. The thing is, as an SIM grad, you already know you are behind one year's worth of content as compared to other schools. You know that employer perception is disadvantageous against us as well. So what are you gonna do about it? Whine and complain and keep saying 'not fair'? No, that won't help at all. Go out there, get internship experience, get a masters degree, do your ACCA for accountancy peeps.

To be honest, I don't think its the degree at all that makes the difference. When I see my sis, its really her out of school activities that really puts mine to shame. Overseas attachment, community projects, competitions, attending extra public lectures and seminars given in the other universities. She does all these things out of her own will, even if they won't be penned down in her CV. Just an advice for uni students, be it local or private, don't just depend on your degree. Every Tom, Dick and Harry is a degree holder nowadays. Do something to stand out and go beyond.

it kind of depends on which industry.
being a banking student, it is possible to secure 3.5 above (for perm roes in foreign banks)
however, this industry is very competitive and perm roles opportunity are really rare. (u rly need exp or connections)

Im fortunate to secure a perm position getting 3.2 after grad in front end banking as a research analyst role. basic may be low compared to peers in this industry but an excellent learning opportunity. profits are up this year compared to previous, and the pros of front end is that we get bonus first before allocating to middle n back end support staffs.

continuing above,

yes im from UOL and just got my final yr results.

my advice for the juniors graduating next year is to quickly farm as much exp as possible.
numerous opportunities during holidays to gain exp/connections.
another way to earn high salary is to do sales in banking, imo, this line really needs handsome/pretty guys/girls with imba sweet talk levels.
