Process Technician/Operation Technician

Any body can shed some light on the prospects of the above mentioned posts? in companies like Shell, SRC, Chevron, ExxonMobil or similar companies..etc..

Wages, Bonus, Shift allowances??...any info is appreciated. TIA!

ST reported last Sat that SRC's basic package is 16.8 months and VB 2 months iirc.

if you're talking about Chevron Oronite and Shell, the basic is 1,450 for ladies a few years ago. for guys, it's the usual 100-200 higher like most companies.

shift allowance is 800 for the refineries/petrochem companies if things haven't changed.

Exxon's VB is 3 months and Shell 6 months right. kindly correct me if i'm wrong or if things haven't changed.

that aside, are you a fresh grad? i think Chevron should be the easiest to get in. they are the most open to taking in fresh grad and have opening every now and then. they have a few pick up points like bishan, amk and a other places other than jurong east.

Exxon has openings every now and then also but i'm not sure how easy it is to get in. they have point to point pick up in various estates.

Shell and SRC (more so) on the other hand don't have openings often. not sure how hard it is to get in but they have 2 or 3 rounds of interviews. first, they test your physical abilities, lifting and rolling out a fire hose and then rolling it back to the kept state and also lifting of this manual fire gun thing that they use to light their furnace manually.

second one is some computer simulation (what i heard from my friend as i didn't get to this round), could be something like DCS, what you need to control etc, followed by panel interview at the last stage. Shell has 2 shift patterns, 8-hr one for bukom and 12-hr for seraya.

please don't laugh at my descriptions and this is all from my recollections when i wanted to enter the industry years ago. did my internship at infineum but i joined the pharma industry in the end.

Thanks for the insight! Actually I'm not a fresh grad,I am in marine industry and looking for a change of envrionment. 28 this year and I've just being offered a offer in Diploma in applied science (Chemical Technology). This course takes 2.5 years to complete.

Abit too old I know and time is running out, but I don't want to just get a generic degree and stay on in the electronics field, so hoping still in time to make the switch.

I got a friend in SRC and he told me his annual package last year was 60k, not too shabby considering he only got ite background (5 yrs exp).

He also told me the ceiling for tech is 5-6k.

i'm the first person who replied you. typical 2-2-3 cycle that most plants follow. work hours stated are typical times as well. some companies may differ slightly, you have to check.

morning: 8am-4pm
afternoon: 4-12pm
night: 12-8am

if it's an 8-hr shift, then it would be-
week 1: mon morning, tue morning, wed afternoon, thu afternoon, fri night, sat night, sun night
week 2: mon off, tue off, wed morning, thu morning, fri afternoon, sat afternoon, sun afternoon
week 3: mon night, tue night, wed off, thu off, fri morning, sat morning, sun morning
week 4: mon afternoon, tue afternoon, wed night, thu night, fri off, sat off, sun off

do take the usage of the word off loosely as i can't remember if it's off day or rest day. former, you get X1.5 for OT and latter X2 for OT.

obviously 12-hr shift is better. most office types already work 12 hours without any OT.

yea i concur for the 8-hr shift, you have to work 7 days before you can get 2 pathetic off/rest days. you work 19 out of 28 days. those who have done the shift tell me however that 8-hr passes very quickly. it's like before you can get much work done, then it's going home time.

for 12-hr shift, you work 14 out of 28 days. but i find that you tend to get quite hungry towards the end of the shift and the work day seems to be never ending. but at least, 2 weekends off as compared to 1 weekend off a month for 8hr shift.

another difference is that for 8hr shift, usually companies will provide point to point transport due to the working hours since there may not be public transport anymore i.e. afternoon going home, night shift going to work.

for those companies that work 12hr shift, they may only provide pickup from nearby MRT stations, since there will be public transport at 8am/8pm.

Hmm, I agree 12 hour shifts seems to be the better of the 2 shift system.

But during week 4, its wed night, Thurs night follow by 3 morning shifts. How is that possible since night shift is until the next day morning?

Is the work nature tend to be very taxing or periods of work with rest time allocated in between?

I just chanced upon this thread.

From my knowledge, a process tech basic is about 1.6 to 1.8k for fresh diploma.
Was surprised to hear 1.45k!

Had a few friends in petrochemical to pharma sector and i am in the pharma sector presently. I entered with 1.8k as a fresh diploma 3 years ago.
Different companies pay differently.

Normally, shift allowances + transport allowances + variable bonus would be paid.
