Product design – Engineering Design salaries?
 

Hi all
I have an interview lined up and I am trying to find salary rates for product designers or industrial designer in Singapore without any success, I suppose this is a small industry there.

I am an European product designer with 6 years of consultancy and corporate experience.
I have a dissent portfolio and slightly above the average skills for someone with 6y experience.


Product design salaries in UK are similar to Engineering Design salaries, so I am looking for info on either of those professions.


I would really appreciate if someone could share any info. Please write salary, years of experience and job title if possible.

Based on your description of your portfolio level and experience, if it is an MNC you are going to work for, I'll ask for between 6000 - 8000 / mth. If it is a local consultancy, ask for between 4000 - 7000.

Hi thanks for the response. It is an MNC. The salary range you describe might be marginally higher than in UK. Good to know.

Why are salaries in UK so low?

Salaries in UK vary from town to town and are usually higher in expensive cities. I used to work outside Portsmouth (South UK) where you could have a 1 bedroom flat, car, relaxed life style and some bank savings with a salary of £2500 per month (4900 SGD).

So I suppose they are lower in some areas in UK because of the cost of living and hordes of unemployed designers to choose from :-)


I know it is purely subjective, but how much does a young couple have to spend in Singapore per month for:

1 bedroom Flat in a middle class neighbourhood, bills and conservative life style, eating out only during weekend? Basically how much does the average middle class couple without kids need?

rental: 2000+
overhead bills: (eletricity+water+tel+internet+tv groceries etc) 1000+
food: 1000+ (very very simple meal unless you like to cook every day)
transport: car 1500 to maintain a 1.5L 2nd hand car or 3-400 if you use public transport(no taxi pls)
Others: 500 - 1000

This is the amount of $ you need to maintain a simple lifestyle in singapore, and I am not mentioning middle class.

Salary $27,914 - $63,790
Bonus $194.73 - $5,156
Profit Sharing $487.22 - $9,899

6k - 8k sounds a little too high even for a MNC. I would say that most MNCs should pay at around 5.5k - 6.5k based on your 6 years experience. Of course if you have a fantastic portfolio, that's another thing, but I seriously doubt any MNC will offer 8k unless you are exceptional.
